Job description

The Department of Administration, Division of Office of Information Technology (OIT) is recruiting for an IT System Administrator 1 in either Anchorage or Juneau. Pay depends on the location of the candidate selected. What You Will Be Doing:

You'll help keep the State of Alaska's identity and directory services running smoothly. This includes managing Active Directory, Entra ID, Certificate Authorities, Single Sign-On, DNS and other identity-related systems that support thousands of users every day., * Active Directory & Entra ID administration Keep our identity systems healthy-managing performance, troubleshooting issues, and supporting key services like Authentication, Group Policy, Federation, and Single Sign-on integrations.

  • Incident & Request Management

Resolve and manage identity-related incidents and requests in the State's "AlaskaNow" ticketing system.

  • Monitoring & basic system health checks Review system logs, perform escalations, and help maintain service stability.

  • Advanced admin tasks with senior oversight Work on higher-level tasks that require elevated access, including upgrades, platform checks, and fault-tolerance improvements.

  • Network component checks & testing Help verify network-related services and ensure they're running reliably.

  • Stay up to date on technology Stay current with emerging cloud technologies and industry best practices, applying new knowledge to enhance identity services and system reliability.

Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess some or all of the following position-specific competencies in addition to the minimum qualifications listed below:

  • Identity Management: Demonstrates the ability to manage and secure user identities across enterprise systems, including account provisioning, access governance, authentication workflows, and adherence to security and compliance standards.
  • Technical Problem Solving: Troubleshoots, diagnoses, analyzes, and identifies system malfunctions to determine the source and cause of the problem.
  • Configuration Management: Knowledge of the principles and methods for planning or managing the implementation, update, or integration of information systems components., Hardware: Knowledge of specifications, uses, and types of computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Infrastructure Design: Knowledge of the architecture and typology of software, hardware, and networks, including LANS, WANS, and telecommunications systems, their components and associated protocols and standards, and how they operate and integrate with one another and with associated controlling software.
  • Operating Systems: Knowledge of computer network, desktop, and mainframe operating systems and their applications.
  • Systems Integration: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and procedures for installing, integrating, and optimizing information systems components.

Equivalent to those typically gained by: Training in computer science, information technology, or system administration - or a similar field or professional experience - that provided knowledge of systems, networking software, hardware, protocols, and scripting/automation tools. Special Note: "Competencies" means a combination of interrelated knowledge, skills, abilities, and behaviors that enable a person to act effectively in a job or situation. "Typically gained by" means the prevalent, usual method of gaining the competencies expected for entry into the job. "Training" means the process of acquiring knowledge and skills through instruction. It includes instruction through formal and informal methods (such as classroom, on-line, self-study, and on-the-job), from accredited and unaccredited sources, and long-duration (such as a post-secondary degree) and short-duration (such as a seminar) programs. "Professional experience" means work that is creative, analytical, evaluative, and interpretive; requires a range and depth of specialized knowledge of the profession's principles, concepts, theories, and practices; and is performed with the power or right to decide or act according to one's own judgment. "Progressively responsible" means indicating growth and/or advancement in complexity, difficulty, or level of responsibility., If education is completed in a foreign college or university, it may be used to meet the above requirements, if applicable. If utilizing this education, you must show that the education credentials have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and that such education has been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs or an accredited U.S. state university reports the other institution as one whose transcript is given full value, or full value is given in subject areas applicable to the curricula at the state university. It is your responsibility to provide such evidence when applying.
