Job description
In support of the Montana State University mission, University Information Technology promotes, develops, delivers, and facilitates the use of information technology services and resources. Duties and Responsibilities The full-time Data Systems Manager I reports to the Lead Database Administrator. The position plans and implements application system administration and development activities according to changing University needs and system requirements. This individual uses innovative approaches and advanced technologies to ensure the performance, security, cost- effectiveness, and accessibility of administrative system functions and related operations. This position will serve as the lead application administrator for the Banner ERP software.
Applications Administration
- Implements and maintains application architecture for Ellucian Banner enterprise framework and other applications as time permits.
- Administer application security including using supported tools to monitor and tune the environments.
- Obtain patches and upgrades for existing application server management systems.
- Maintain currency with application-specific knowledge.
- Stage, test, and install patches and upgrades.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, diagnose, and report application problems/defects utilizing product specific technical support as needed.
- Coordinates closely with Business Analysts and other key stakeholders.
Technical Planning
- Define goals and objectives for database or Web server administration requirements.
- Gather technical requirements to meet business needs.
- Formulate system concepts to fulfill requirements.
- Plan technical tasks associated with the administration and maintenance of systems and services.
- Develop and maintain status of task lists.
- Monitor, analyze, and evaluate work progress and report status to management or project owners.
System Administration of Banner and Web Application Services
- Provide support for web applications system administration.
- Install, upgrade, and patch systems including managing security and assuring adequate capacity.
- Monitor performance for Administrative Systems Web Application servers and enterprise ancillary systems (e.g. Banner, Banner self-service, DegreeWorks, Tomcat, etc.).
- Maintain and apply local modifications for web applications and underlying database packages.
- Troubleshoot problems and seek appropriate support to assist in problem resolution.
Information Security
- Follow information security best practices and abide by University security policies and the guidance of the Enterprise Security Group.
- Assist DBA team in managing database risk by preserving enterprise data and protecting the operational integrity and security of these high-value database systems.

- Possess an understanding of Ellucian Banner database structures and operations.
- Understand Banner forms and self-service and underlying database packages.
- Manage time effectively.
Requirements

A bachelor's degree in computer science, business administration, or a related field plus progressively responsible experience in information systems management, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with operating systems and scripting languages (e.g. Linux, Windows, Shells and scripting, SQL, PL/SQL, etc.).

Knowledge of web application server architectures and components such as Oracle Weblogic, Tomcat, JBoss, Apache, and IIS.

Knowledge of appropriate procedures, protocols and tools for staging, testing, and maintaining production environments.

Skilled in writing, executing, and managing scripting commonly used to install, configure, and diagnose web application and application server environments.
Preferred Qualifications - Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

Experience applying upgrades and patches to Ellucian's Banner administrative system.

Experience administering Tomcat Application Server and Ellucian software tools.

Knowledge of Banner and DegreeWorks infrastructure and business processes.
