Job description
The Software Development Engineer II is an experienced software engineer specializing in Java development and microservices architecture. This role independently develops scalable, cloud-ready applications while contributing to software design, architecture, operational excellence, and production support.
What You Will Do *Design software components by translating product requirements into scalable technical solutions. *Contribute to software architecture decisions and technical design discussions. *Build modular, extensible, maintainable, and performant applications. *Design, execute, and maintain unit, functional, and integration tests. *Apply secure coding practices throughout the software development lifecycle. *Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering quality standards. *Support system performance optimization, scalability improvements, and reliability initiatives. *Design applications with observability, operational readiness, and supportability in mind. *Research new technologies, frameworks, and engineering practices. *Participate in proof-of-concepts and technical experimentation. *Troubleshoot application and production issues using structured root cause analysis. *Support applications throughout their lifecycle, including production support. *Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver business solutions., All activities involving access to Mastercard assets, information, and networks comes with an inherent risk to the organization and, therefore, it is expected that every person working for, or on behalf of, Mastercard is responsible for information security and must:

Requirements
*Solid understanding of Java, J2EE, Spring, Spring Boot, Kafka, RESTful Web Services, and JPA. *Experience developing cloud-ready applications and microservices. *Understanding of software architecture and design principles. *Experience with automated testing, unit testing, and integration testing. *Familiarity with performance optimization and scalability concepts. *Understanding of secure software development practices. *Experience participating in code reviews. *Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills. *Exposure to CI/CD and Test-Driven Development practices. *Experience or exposure to AI-assisted applications, autonomous agents, or agentic workflows. *Agile Scrum experience.

In line with Mastercard's total compensation philosophy and assuming that the job will be performed in the US, the successful candidate will be offered a competitive base salary and may be eligible for an annual bonus or commissions depending on the role. The base salary offered may vary depending on multiple factors, including but not limited to location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Pay Ranges O'Fallon, Missouri: $92,000 - $147,000 USD
