Job description

ING's Payment and Settlement Services (PSS) is seeking a Senior DevOps Engineer to join their team in Amsterdam. PSS is an independent unit within ING's CTO domain, responsible for delivering state-of-the-art payments and settlement services to multiple business lines. You will focus on the development, deployment, and operational excellence of payment engine platforms, APIs, and microservices built with Java and Spring frameworks, deployed via Azure DevOps pipelines.

Responsibilities

  • Take full ownership of the technology stack across Development, Test, Acceptance, and Production environments
  • Automate relentlessly: manage configuration via Ansible, deploy via CI/CD pipelines, and eliminate redundant manual tasks through scripting
  • Oversee regression testing (functional, performance, security), deployments, and operations including data centre failover, backups/restore, and security monitoring
  • Manage the complete lifecycle of all infrastructure components (OS, middleware, database) and security controls (encryption certificates, access management, vulnerability patching)
  • Work in Agile/Scrum squads, collaborating with Technical Product Owners and capability teams to deliver features and improvements
  • Enhance application monitoring using Grafana, Prometheus, ELK, and telemetry tools with appropriate alerting
  • Support High Availability and Disaster Recovery testing and implementation
  • Identify opportunities to automate deployments, monitoring, and operational processes
  • Conduct root cause analysis for issues and propose viable technical solutions
  • Take ownership of technical improvements and see them through to completion
  • Assist with technical specifications for change requests and user stories
  • Implement continuous deployment and delivery practices using Azure DevOps
  • Ensure IT risk and security controls are in place and documented in accordance with ING Information Security Management Policy

Work environment

You will work within a high-performing DevOps squad practising the Agile manifesto, where problem-solving drives technology choice rather than the reverse. The team is committed to fostering a strong engineering culture and delivering high-productivity outcomes. Work is hybrid, with the option to work from home or from the office in Amsterdam (Cedar location). You will collaborate closely with multiple business lines and capability squads across ING.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a DevOps role
  • Proven expertise with at least one automation tool (Ansible, Chef, Salt, Terraform, or equivalent)
  • Strong experience with Azure DevOps or similar CI/CD platforms (Git, Jenkins, GitLab CI)
  • Deep knowledge of Red Hat operating systems (RHEL certification preferred) and networking in clustered environments
  • Hands-on experience with containerization and/or virtualization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, VMware, or OpenStack)
  • Proficiency in scripting languages (Python, Shell, Bash) for automation
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools (Prometheus, Grafana, ELK stack)
  • Solid understanding of REST APIs, DevOps and SRE concepts, and RDBMS database principles
  • Strong analytical skills, proactivity, and excellent communication abilities

Nice to have

  • Basic knowledge of Spring Boot framework
  • Experience with low-latency infrastructure stacks
  • Knowledge of security and IT risk frameworks (SOX, vulnerability management)
  • Advanced English language skills
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Cybernetics, Software Engineering, or equivalent
  • Experience with Tibco EMS/MQ or WebSphere
