The Opportunity

We're hiring a forward-thinking and dedicated Software Engineer Lead to join a dynamic, startup-minded team within the Investment Experience Technology organization at USAA, part of the Technology group. You will lead solutioning and development to deliver a new LOB Member experience to serve our member's financial needs and play a pivotal role in shaping the technical direction of our new investment services line of business.

You'll work with a modern tech stack-including Go, Java, APIs, OpenShift, and a wide range of USAA technologies-to help build the next generation of investment solutions. Our goal? We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position will be based in San Antonio; TX or Plano; TX. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you'll do:

  • Design, develop, code, and test complex technical solutions.
  • Investigates and resolves complex application and system technical problems and production issues through troubleshooting techniques.
  • Continually improves operations by conducting complex systems analysis and recommending changes in policies and procedures.
  • Prepares and installs complex solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.
  • Follows the software development lifecycle.
  • Participates in design reviews and learns key system design principles.
  • Mentors junior engineers and may begin mentoring peer engineers; Review teammates' code.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
  • 8+ years of software development experience, including 2+ years leading enterprise technology initiatives.
  • 6+ years delivering technology solutions across the full SDLC.
  • Deep expertise in Java, JavaScript, Spring Boot, OpenShift, and modern software engineering practices.
  • Enterprise-level experience leading Java-based enterprise application development.
  • Expertise designing and implementing Dynamic UI and Server-Driven UI (SDUI) frameworks using React, Redux, and Spring Boot, including UI metadata contracts, rendering frameworks, component libraries, design systems, personalization, and reusable user experiences.
  • Deep experience designing and implementing scalable API-first solutions using Spring Boot, REST APIs, Docker containers, and enterprise integration patterns.
  • Strong experience designing and leading cloud-native solutions using OpenShift, AWS, containerization, observability, automation, and modern platform engineering practices.
  • Demonstrated leadership building highly scalable, secure, resilient, and performant enterprise applications, including threat modeling, authentication/authorization, secure coding practices, and vulnerability remediation.
  • Deep experience designing and implementing event-driven architectures using Kafka, including real-time streaming, asynchronous processing, topic design, and event-driven integration patterns.
  • Experience integrating UI, APIs, and workflow orchestration platforms such as Flowable, Camunda, or similar BPM technologies.
  • Experience leading integrations with enterprise data platforms, Snowflake, data warehouses, and real-time or batch processing pipelines.
  • Experience with modern engineering practices including TDD, automated testing, Git, GitLab CI, Maven, and Gradle.
  • Experience supporting wealth management, brokerage, investment services, financial planning, advisor workflows, or regulated financial services environments.
  • Experience with Documentum and DocuSign integration is desirable.

Benefits & conditions

Compensation range: The salary range for this position is: $127,310- $243,340 .

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
