Enabling intelligent logistics automation: home-grown Industrial IoT platform at Austrian Post

Optimized asset management and shop-floor automation are critical for modern logistics to enable continuous year over year growth in parcel volumes at Austrian Post (232 m. parcels in 2025 in Austria alone).This makes scalable, resilient and secure automation a business imperative. Although the market offers numerous innovative tools, they often arrive as vendor specific islands, so integrations remain use-case specific and site bound, leaving value trapped in siloed pilots. We counter this with a best-of-breed strategy on a unified Industria IoT (IIoT) platform. This talk outlines our Industry 4.0 transformation journey with the aim of driving IT-OT convergence in the core of logistics operations. It covers the design, deployment, and operation of a homegrown IIoT platform built on Kubernetes that empowers strategic data ownership, supports multi-site rollout of diverse use cases, and enables secure onboarding of AI and third-party solutions into critical infrastructure. A concrete end-to-end automation use-case will be presented: The integration of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) operating safely and efficiently alongside human personnel, demonstrating how a cohesive IIoT architecture unlocks scalable, interoperable automation.
