As one of the few state agencies with a fully in-house ITS Division, the Colorado Department of State provides a unique environment where technology leadership directly influences statewide services and supports multiple critical systems for the State of Colorado. The Systems Operations Unit Work unit staff evaluates, selects, installs, upgrades, enhances, and maintains all domain servers, including, but not limited to, domain controllers, file server(s), print server(s), mail server(s), accounting system server(s), domain database server(s), phone system server(s), utility server(s), etc. The work unit’s duties involve all aspects surrounding the collection, storage, and dissemination of data received from Colorado counties for voter registration including HAVA (Help America Vote Act) supplied through SCORE system, UCC filings, domestic and foreign business entities, notary, campaign finance, lobbyist, and any other systems assigned to the CDOS office through legislation. The Systems Operations team provides CDOS technical operating system and base application support, as well as general assistance for development, database, engineering, and security teams. Illustration of Duties As the Systems Engineer you will be a valued member of the Systems Operations team, which provides safe and secure infrastructure and operations across all of the agency’s vital systems as well as the data collected and maintained by our systems. You will be a part of a department that continues to be recognized as a leader, both in Colorado and nationally, in the use of technology in multiple program areas. In this position, you will experience working within a high-functioning professional team and collaborating with other teams within the ITS Division and the Department.
The ideal candidate will be proficient in administering Operating Systems, specifically Linux with additional knowledge in virtualization and cloud support. You should display strong problem-solving skills with the ability to use research, reason, and deduction to resolve technical issues. To succeed in this role, it’s important that you have the desire to learn new skills in the IT field, step up as a valued member of the team, and promote a diverse and inclusive perspective in your daily work. The position’s primary duties include:
- Operating systems including, but not limited to, Linux and base application support, maintenance, and administration.
- Webserver and application server software support, maintenance, and administration.
- Virtualization and cloud support, maintenance, and administration.
- Development software support, maintenance, and administration.
- Professional development, secondary (backup) administration, & other duties as assigned.
The position’s secondary (backup) duties include the following:
- Linux Identity Management support, maintenance, and administration.
- Linux/ Automation support, maintenance, and administration.
- SAN networking and storage array support, maintenance, and administration.
- Other Linux application support and administration duties as assigned.

Equal Pay for Equal Work A wide salary range is posted for this position and any job offer is based upon a salary analysis to comply with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act. The salary analysis considers relevant experience, education, certifications, and state seniority as compared to others doing substantially similar work. While all offers are compliant with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, there is no guarantee an offer will be at the top of the posted range based on the salary analysis.
Requirements
Do you have experience in WAF?, This position requires a total of three (3) years in applicable professional experience and/or education in a field of study related to the work. To be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate that you meet one of the following options outlined below: OPTION 1 - Experience Three (3) years of professional experience as a systems administrator with a focus on the Linux Operating System and base application support, maintenance, and administration. OR OPTION 2 -Experience and/or Education-Be sure you’ve attached a copy of your unofficial transcript to qualify for this option. (You may redact information that identifies age, date of birth, or dates of attendance at or graduation from an educational institution.) A combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, certification, and/or relevant experience as defined in Option 1 to equal three (3) years. Related education includes accredited course work in Computer Science, Information Technology, Management Information Systems, Mathematics/Statistics, Data Science/Data Analytics, Database Management, Engineering, or closely related field. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. This documentation is the responsibility of the applicant and must be included as part of your application materials. Failure to provide a transcript or credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this announcement.
