Job description
At Cloudflare, weāre not looking for people who wait for a polished roadmap; weāre looking for the builders who see the cracks in the Internet that everyone else has simply learned to live with. We value candidates who have the instinct to spot a ānormalizedā problem and the AI-native curiosity to create a solution using the latest tools. Our culture is built on iteration, leveraging AI to ship faster today to make it better tomorrow, while ensuring that every improvement, no matter how small, is shared across the team to lift everyone up. If youāre the type of person who values curiosity over bureaucracy, and that AI is a partner in solving tough problems to keep the Internet moving forward, youāll fit right in., The Cloudflare Hyperdrive team builds the technology that makes regional databases feel like they are global. Hyperdrive is a core piece of the Cloudflare Developer Platform that accelerates database queries from Cloudflare Workers by pooling connections and caching data at the edge. By eliminating the massive latency overhead of TCP, TLS, and database-specific handshakes, Hyperdrive allows developers to use the databases they already know and love-like PostgreSQL and MySQL-without the ācold startā performance penalties typically associated with serverless environments.
Hyperdrive is integrated directly into the Cloudflare global network and features:
- Global Connection Pooling: Maintains āwarmā connections to origin databases across the globe, reducing connection times by up to 90%.
- Intelligent Query Caching: Automatically caches frequently run read queries as close to the user as possible.
- Protocol-Aware Proxying: Features custom-built implementations of database wire protocols (PostgreSQL and MySQL) to parse and optimize traffic in real-time.
- Seamless Integration: Works with existing ORMs and drivers, providing a simple connection string that ājust worksā for developers.
Requirements
- You have 4+ years of professional experience with Rust, Go, or C++. You understand how to write code that respects CPU and memory constraints.
- You are comfortable with the Linux networking stack. You know your way around TCP/IP, TLS, and WebSockets.
- You donāt just use databases; you understand how they work. Youāre familiar with connection lifecycles, transaction states, and wire protocols.
- You enjoy the challenge of debugging complex, distributed systems and building for āfive ninesā reliability., * Experience with PgBouncer, ProxySQL, or custom database middleware.
- Familiarity with the Cloudflare Workers ecosystem and the unique stateful connection challenges of ephemeral computing.
- Youāve contributed to database drivers, ORMs, or low-level networking libraries.
- Experience using eBPF, perf, or other profiling tools to find and kill bottlenecks.
