DUTIES: Involves responsibility for providing Technical support services for computer training to personnel including the installation and maintenance of computer software and related peripheral equipment.
This position involves responsibility for providing technical support services for computer training to personnel including the installation and maintenance of computer software and related peripheral equipment. The incumbent may also operate a micro-computer and related peripheral equipment. Work is performed under the general direction with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision over the work of others is not a responsibility of employees in this class. Does related work as required.
SCOPE OF EXAMINATION: Candidates are required to submit an online application on or before the last filing date of July 16, 2026. Approved candidates will be sent a notice containing directions to a website address needed to complete a training and experience questionnaire.
Approved candidates will be required to complete and submit an on-line questionnaire between August 1, 2026 and August 31, 2026. Note: Candidates will not be able to claim any credit for training and experience gained after the application filing deadline of July 16, 2026., The candidate MUST complete and submit an Application for Examination for each examination they wish to apply for. Falsification of any part of the Application will result in disqualification. Applicants must complete every question on the application form. Incomplete applications will be disapproved. Submission of a resume does not relieve you of the responsibility for completing all sections of the official application. The resume is a supplement of the application and not a substitute for it. To receive credit for experience on a job, basic information such as address, name, title of supervisor, hours in a work week, etc. Must be shown on the application. We do not make any formal acknowledgement of the receipt of an application or take responsibility for non-delivery of mail or postal delay.

RESIDENCY: Applicants must have been legal residents of Wayne, Monroe, Ontario, Seneca or Cayuga counties for at least one month immediately preceding the examination date. In accordance with Section 23-4 (a) of Civil Service Law, preference in appointment may be given to residents in the jurisdiction where the vacancy exists. When preference in certification is given, an eligible must have been a resident of such municipality for at least one month prior to the date of certification and must be a resident of such municipality at the time of certification and appointment. Applicants must list a home address to be considered for preference in certification.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT FOR APPOINTMENT IN SCHOOL DISTRICT: Per Chapter 180 of the Laws of 2000, and by Regulations of the Commissioner of Education, to be employed in a position designated by a school district as involving direct contact with students, a clearance for employment from the State Education Department is required.
BACKGROUND & FINGERPRINTING: Background and Fingerprinting checks may be required to determine suitability for employment for all positions., In conformance with Section 85-a of the Civil Service Law, children of firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty shall be entitled to receive and additional ten points in a competitive examination for original appointment in the same municipality in which his or her parent has served. If you are qualified to participate in this examination and are a child of a firefighter or police officer killed in the line of duty in this municipality, please inform this office of this matter when you submit your application for examination. A candidate claiming such credit has a minimum of two months from the application deadline to provide the necessary documentation to verify additional credit eligibility. However, no credit may be added after the eligible list has been established.
PROMOTIONAL EXAMINATIONS: SENIORITY POINTS will be added to an eligible score as follows: 0.1 points for each 6 months based on the length of continuous competitive class service in the appointing jurisdiction up to a maximum of twenty years.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Installs, operates and maintains micro-computer software;
- Installs hardware and other peripheral equipment;
- Prepares documentation for users of on-line terminals, that provide direction for use of electronic office and administrative software;
- May assist in training staff in the use of office software and administrative applications;
- Assists coordinators in locating appropriate software, program files and date files for training sessions;
- Reviews new programs to assure completion according to predetermined requirements;
- Analyzes the flow of information between the data center and the various units participating in the data processing system(s);
- Will operate a computer and related peripheral equipment in compiling and processing data for a variety of reports;
- Consults with superiors and reports problems and deviations affecting workload and scheduling;
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new trends and technology for computer hardware, software and networking;
- Installs communication software for remote access to system;
- Analyzes and takes corrective action to resolve network problems involving computers and data communications hardware and software;
- Previews software for potential purchase and use.
Requirements
Good knowledge of the use and operation of micro-computers and related peripheral equipment; ability to install and troubleshoot networks and computer related equipment; working knowledge of office terminology and procedures; ability to install, adapt and maintain purchased software to existing applications; ability to operate an alpha-numeric keyboard at an acceptable rate of speed; ability to operate a micro-computer and related peripheral equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to plan and schedule micro-computer training activities; ability to instruct others in the use and adaptability of micro-computers and purchased software to financial and statistical record keeping; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position., * A). Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one recognized by the New York State Education Department as following acceptable practices with an Associate Degree in computer science, electronic data processing or related field and one year of experience in the operation of micro-computers and peripheral equipment; including installation and maintenance of computer software and hardware; or
- B). Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience as described in “A” above; or
- C). An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of “A” and “B” above

Rates for other participating municipalities and school districts vary by district., ELIGIBLE LISTS: The duration of an eligible list may be fixed for a minimum period of one and not more than four years. Appointment from an eligible list must be made from the top three candidates’ willing to accept appointment.
DECENTRALIZED EXAMS The Human Resources Office reserves the right to terminate the special recruitment program at any time for decentralized examinations and re-establish a program of periodic testing for decentralized examinations.
