Job description

We are seeking a Remote Senior SALT Accountant to manage state and local tax compliance, planning, and research across multiple jurisdictions. In this role, you will analyze nexus and apportionment issues, support tax provisions, lead audit responses, and partner with cross-functional teams to minimize exposure while ensuring timely, accurate compliance., * Compliance Management: Own end-to-end multi-state and local tax compliance, including preparing, reviewing, and filing returns and extensions.

  • Tax Provision & Analysis: Analyze nexus, apportionment, sourcing, and taxability issues. Support SALT components of tax provision calculations, journal entries, and reconciliations.
  • Research & Audits: Conduct technical tax research, document tax positions, and lead responses to state/local audits and notices.
  • Collaboration & Process Improvement: Partner with payroll, accounting, and legal teams to gather facts and remediate exposure. Maintain and improve SALT processes, leverage automation, and implement tax software.
  • Mentorship: Provide coaching to junior staff and coordinate with external consultants on complex matters.
  • Regulatory Monitoring: Track state and local legislative changes and recommend proactive tax strategies to management.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (Master’s or advanced tax coursework is a plus).
  • Experience: 3+ years of professional tax experience focused heavily on SALT/state compliance within a public accounting firm or corporate tax department.
  • Technical Skills: Strong technical knowledge of state and local tax rules, nexus principles, and apportionment methodologies. Advanced Excel skills for handling large datasets.
  • Systems: Proficiency with tax compliance platforms and accounting systems.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly document technical tax positions.
  • Preferred: A CPA license is highly desirable; experience supporting broader corporate income tax returns is a plus.
