Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to join our growing technology team in Plymouth. This is an excellent opportunity for a database professional who thrives in a high-availability environment and enjoys optimising, securing, and maintaining business-critical database systems.

You will play a key role in ensuring database performance, reliability, scalability, and security while supporting business applications and collaborating with infrastructure, development, and cybersecurity teams., * Install, configure, maintain, and upgrade enterprise database environments.

  • Monitor database performance and implement tuning strategies to maximise efficiency.
  • Design and manage backup, recovery, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes.
  • Ensure database security, compliance, and access control best practices.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve database incidents with minimal downtime.
  • Implement database monitoring, automation, and maintenance routines.
  • Support application deployments and database migrations.
  • Optimise SQL queries, indexing strategies, and database architecture.
  • Produce technical documentation and maintain operational procedures.

Requirements

  • Proven commercial experience as a Senior Database Administrator or similar role.
  • Strong expertise in Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, or PostgreSQL.
  • Advanced knowledge of SQL, database optimisation, indexing, replication, and performance tuning.
  • Experience with backup and recovery solutions, high availability, and disaster recovery planning.
  • Familiarity with Windows Server and/or Linux administration.
  • Knowledge of database security standards and compliance requirements.
  • Experience with database monitoring and automation tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across technical teams.

Desirable Skills

  • Experience with cloud database platforms such as Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud.
  • Knowledge of PowerShell, Python, or other scripting languages.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure as Code.
  • Relevant database certifications are advantageous.
