Job description

The Product Testing & Lab Specialist (m/f/d) supports the product development and quality assurance processes by preparing materials, conducting tests, maintaining equipment, and recording and analyzing results. This role is critical in ensuring product performance, material properties, and compliance with established standards and regulatory requirements. The PTT reports to the Homologation Lab Manager and collaborates closely with Homologation Project Engineers, Technical Designers, and external laboratories, This is a permanent, full-time position based in Cologne (DE), reporting to our Homologation Lab Manager., Testing and Analysis:

  • Perform a wide range of tests on products and materials according to established protocols, industry standards, and regulatory requirements (e.g., ASTM, ISO, internal specifications).
  • Conduct mechanical, physical, chemical, and environmental tests to evaluate product performance, material properties, and durability.
  • Prepare test specimens, materials, and equipment for various testing procedures, ensuring proper setup and calibration.
  • Accurately record test results, observations, and relevant data, noting any deviations or anomalies.
  • Input of data into the laboratory information management system or other relevant databases, maintaining detailed and organized records.
  • Assist in the preliminary analysis of test data, generating summary reports, and identifying trends or areas for further investigation.
  • Conduct visual assessments and dimensional checks of samples to identify defects, inconsistencies, or deviations from design specifications.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to interpret complex test results and determine if additional testing or corrective actions are required.

Sample Management and Processing:

  • Prepare and create master samples according to established protocols and standards, ensuring accuracy and consistency.
  • Label and catalog all samples accurately to ensure full traceability throughout the testing lifecycle.
  • Ensure samples are processed and managed in a timely manner to meet project schedules and deadlines.
  • Follow detailed procedures to maintain sample integrity.
  • Coordinate the shipping and receiving of samples to and from internal and external laboratories or clients for further testing or validation.
  • Track and document the shipment, receipt, storage for all samples.

Equipment Maintenance and Calibration:

  • Ensure all testing equipment, instrumentation, and laboratory apparatus are calibrated, maintained, and operating correctly and safely.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and checks on all testing instruments and equipment.
  • Manage inventory of testing supplies, consumables, and materials, ensuring adequate stock levels and proper storage.
  • Identify and report any equipment malfunctions or calibration issues promptly.

Collaboration and Communication:

  • Communicate test results, findings, issues, and pre-assessments clearly and concisely to the Homologation Lab Manager, Homologation Project Engineers, and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including technical design, engineering, and manufacturing, to support product development and quality initiatives.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss test plans, results, and project progress.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Strictly adhere to all laboratory safety protocols, procedures, and health and safety regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient laboratory workspace.

Requirements

  • Technical degree/apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience. Lab/product testing experience desirable.
  • Skilled in operating/troubleshooting lab equipment (e.g., tensile testers, spectrophotometers), understanding material properties, and interpreting technical specs. Familiarity with standard testing methodologies, basic statistical data analysis, and precise measurement tools (calipers, micrometers).
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks, proactive, strong attention to detail in data recording, and capable of developing/optimizing test methods.
  • Committed to high-quality standards and continuous improvement.
  • Strong analytical skills for interpreting data and identifying trends. Ability to troubleshoot equipment and resolve product failure root causes.
  • Fluent German and good English (written and spoken) are essential.
