Job description

Under the direction of the Director of Information Technology, this position supports and enhances the League’s web-based applications, internal directories, and mailing list management systems. The Junior Web Developer will contribute to backend development projects, API integrations, database management, and WordPress application enhancements that support both the Iowa League of Cities (ILOC) and the Iowa Municipalities Workers’ Compensation Association (IMWCA).

Requirements

Key responsibilities include maintaining and improving custom WordPress applications, developing PHP-based integrations, designing and supporting MySQL database solutions, and creating tools that improve organizational efficiency and data management. The position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience with WordPress development, API integrations, database design, and cloud-based technologies while supporting Iowa’s cities and municipal organizations.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED and experience or coursework related to web development, computer science, information technology, or a related field. Candidates should possess basic to intermediate knowledge of PHP, WordPress development, MySQL databases, RESTful APIs, and LAMP stack environments. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and communication skills are essential.

Preferred qualifications include experience with WordPress custom development, logging frameworks, version control systems such as Git, Google Cloud Platform, and an interest in nonprofit or public-sector technology initiatives.

This is a hybrid position based in Des Moines, Iowa, requiring a minimum of two days per week in the office. The Iowa League of Cities offers a collaborative environment where employees work on meaningful projects that directly support Iowa communities and local governments.
