Job description
The Coast Guard’s surface fleet generates logistics data across transportation, warehouse, maintenance, and supply systems, and SFLC needs that data flowing, clean, and answering questions. The Senior Data Scientist builds and manages the ETL processes that consolidate those sources, develops predictive models for asset readiness forecasting and inventory management, and delivers the dashboards SFLC leadership uses to make decisions. Working within the Coast Guard’s data systems suite, the Data Scientist owns data quality end to end, from ingestion to insight. This is a builder’s role in which the models produced directly affect fleet readiness.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Work within the Coast Guard data systems suite using various programming languages, tools, and platforms for data management, analytics, and reporting
- Develop, implement, and manage ETL processes consolidating data from multiple sources, including transportation management systems, warehouse management systems, and external data providers
- Automate data workflows to ensure timely, accurate, and consistent data availability for analytics and reporting
- Ensure seamless data flow and integration across different platforms and systems
- Collect, clean, and preprocess data from logistics and business sources, ensuring high data quality and consistency
- Support development and implementation of predictive and statistical models for asset readiness forecasting, inventory management, and operational optimization
- Support design and maintenance of dashboards and data visualizations delivering actionable insights to SFLC leadership and stakeholders
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience designing and managing ETL processes and data pipelines across multiple source systems
- Proficiency in data programming languages and tools (e.g., Python, R, SQL) and visualization platforms (e.g., Tableau, Power BI)
- Experience developing predictive or statistical models applied to operational problems such as forecasting or inventory optimization
- Experience automating data workflows and enforcing data quality standards
- U.S. citizenship and ability to obtain a favorable Tier 1 background investigation and CAC
- Bachelor’s degree in data science, computer science, statistics, or a related field; 8 or more years of relevant experience preferred, minimum 5 years required, * Experience with logistics, supply chain, or fleet maintenance data
- Prior federal, DHS, or DoD data environment experience
- Experience with cloud data platforms or enterprise data warehouses
- Machine learning model deployment experience
- Familiarity with transportation or warehouse management systems as data sources
