Job description

Build the Future of eCommerce Senior Software Developer / Database Administrator C#, SQL, APIs, Enterprise Systems Support shopCGX.com & Mission-Critical Operations, The purpose of this position is to serve as a Senior Software Developer and Database Administrator responsible for the design, development, integration, and operational support of the Coast Guard CSC’s enterprise eCommerce technologies, including the shopCGX.com website and associated internal and external systems. Reporting to the Director of Application Systems within the CSC IT Division, the incumbent performs work requiring advanced technical expertise and independent judgment in planning, developing, testing, deploying, and maintaining complex application systems and databases that support mission-critical retail operations.

The position is responsible for leading and executing application development and integration efforts across the full system lifecycle. This includes designing and implementing secure, scalable, and reliable application components; supporting service-based and API-driven integrations; maintaining data integrity across interconnected systems; and contributing to the modernization and enhancement of existing applications. The incumbent evaluates technical alternatives, recommends solutions, and implements designs that balance functionality, performance, security, and maintainability.

The Software Developer/Database Administrator works independently and as a technical lead on assigned projects, coordinating with other developers, IT staff, contractors, and business stakeholders across CSC. The position resolves complex technical problems, performs analysis to identify root causes, and implements corrective actions to ensure continued system availability and operational stability.

The position also administers and maintains enterprise databases, supports batch and background processing activities, and develops automation and monitoring solutions to improve system reliability and operational efficiency. The incumbent provides off-hours and on-call support as required to support change management, system deployments, and incident response.

This position requires effective verbal and written communication skills to explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, provide status updates and recommendations to management, and support CSC users. The incumbent demonstrates sound judgment, strong problem-solving ability, and a customer-service focus while working in a dynamic operational environment.

Performs other related duties as assigned., Authority: The U.S. Coast Guard rates applicants under the authority of Title 5 of U.S. Code, Sections 301, 1104, 1302, 2103, 3301, 3304, Executive Order 9397, and Departmental Regulations.

Requirements

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or a high school diploma/GED with six (6) or more years of progressively responsible, directly related experience in software development and enterprise application support. Relevant technical certifications may be substituted when accompanied by demonstrated senior-level software development and technical expertise.

  2. Three (3) years of professional experience analyzing, designing, developing, testing, and implementing web-based applications in a retail enterprise or business environment, including integration of third-party vendor software and in-house developed systems using tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio and Microsoft Visual Studio Code.

  3. Three (3) years of professional experience developing software using C# in an enterprise environment, including development of services, business logic, and data access components.

  4. Three (3) years of experience participating in or leading application projects using Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodologies, including requirements definition, design, development, testing, deployment, and maintenance.

  5. Three (3) years of experience administering or developing against Microsoft SQL Server or equivalent enterprise relational database systems, including writing queries, troubleshooting performance issues, and supporting production systems.

  6. Ability to independently resolve complex technical problems, exercise sound judgment, and work with minimal supervision in a production environment supporting mission-critical systems.

  7. Ability to routinely lift up to 30 pounds.

Preferred (in addition to the minimum):

  1. Experience developing and supporting complex, integrated software systems in a large-scale retail or eCommerce enterprise environment.

  2. Experience designing and maintaining API-based integrations, including RESTful or GraphQL services, between internal systems and external vendors or platforms.

  3. Experience developing or administering SharePoint-based applications or solutions in an enterprise environment.

  4. Experience supporting or maintaining PCI-DSS, cybersecurity, or regulatory compliance requirements for eCommerce or retail systems.

  5. Experience using Node.js or Bun for scripting, automation, integration services, or backend development.

  6. Experience using Python for automation, data processing, integration, or operational support tasks.

  7. Experience using version control systems such as Git and Bitbucket in a collaborative development environment.

  8. Experience developing, integrating, or supporting Shopify-based eCommerce applications or services, including custom applications, APIs, or platform integrations.
