Job description

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you’ll be responsible for the ongoing development and optimisation of an established portfolio of engineered products. Acting as the technical expert throughout the product lifecycle, you’ll improve manufacturability, enhance product performance and support production with practical engineering solutions.

You’ll combine hands-on engineering with CAD expertise, working closely with cross-functional teams to solve complex challenges and deliver continuous improvements across manufacturing, quality and product design.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Lead sustaining engineering and continuous improvement initiatives across existing product ranges.
  • Develop accurate 3D models and manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
  • Drive Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) initiatives to improve efficiency, quality and cost.
  • Own Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and Engineering Change Notices (ECNs), ensuring all technical documentation remains accurate and controlled.
  • Investigate product and manufacturing issues using structured problem-solving techniques including 8D, FMEA, Fishbone and 5 Whys.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes, validating new design improvements before full production release.
  • Work closely with Production, Quality and Supply Chain teams to implement engineering improvements and qualify alternative components or suppliers.
  • Support product compliance, technical documentation and engineering data within PDM and ERP systems.
  • Contribute to value engineering initiatives, helping reduce costs while maintaining the highest standards of quality and performance.

Requirements

We’re looking for an engineer who enjoys solving problems, improving products and seeing their designs successfully manufactured., * Strong experience using SolidWorks for both 3D modelling and detailed manufacturing drawings.

  • A background in sustaining engineering, product development or mechanical design within a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience designing sheet metal, fabricated or mechanical assemblies.
  • A solid understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, coatings, glazing, joinery and mechanical assembly.
  • Proven knowledge of Design for Manufacture (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Experience leading engineering change processes and supporting production environments.
  • Strong analytical and root cause investigation skills.
  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (or equivalent industry experience).

Desirable Experience

  • Experience with commercial doorsets, architectural hardware or safety/security products.
  • Knowledge of UL or other industry compliance standards.
  • Experience supporting multiple manufacturing sites or global product portfolios.
  • Professional registration or working towards Chartership.
