Job description
- Design, build, and own the API and integration layer that connects Lumira to school data systems (SIS and LMS) over REST and education standards like OneRoster, so district data flows in cleanly, reliably, and at scale. This is the core of the role
- Build and ship full-stack features using TypeScript, React, and Next.js on the front end and a serverless Node API layer on the back end, with a high bar for quality and performance
- Architect and extend our multi-tenant data platform on Supabase and PostgreSQL, using Row-Level Security to guarantee tenant isolation and data integrity as we scale to many districts
- Build AI-native features on top of large language models such as OpenAI GPT-4o, including tool and function-calling agents, streaming responses, and safe, evidence-grounded outputs
- Own quality across the lifecycle by writing tests, reviewing code, and managing CI/CD on Vercel for fast, dependable releases
- Craft responsive, accessible interfaces with React and Tailwind that make complex district data feel simple and trustworthy for educators
- Build security and privacy in from the start, applying role and attribute-based access control, careful PII handling, and FERPA-aligned practices to everything you ship
- Help shape technical strategy, hiring, and product direction as a founding member of the team
Requirements
- Extensive, proven experience designing, building, and integrating APIs, including connecting to third-party systems over REST and webhooks, handling authentication, rate limits, retries, and messy real-world data, and building integrations that stay reliable in production. This is a core requirement for the role
- Proven full-stack engineering experience shipping production web applications, with deep proficiency in TypeScript and modern React
- Strong backend and data skills, including designing PostgreSQL schemas, writing efficient queries, and building secure multi-tenant systems
- Hands-on experience building on large language models or AI APIs such as OpenAI, including function and tool calling, streaming, and handling model output responsibly
- Comfort with cloud deployment and CI/CD, ideally on Vercel, along with strong Git and GitHub workflows and automated testing
- A solid grasp of system design for building maintainable, scalable services, and strong security instincts around access control, data privacy, and protecting sensitive student data
- Self-directed and effective owning features end to end in a small, fast-moving startup where you set your own standard and carry real responsibility, * Experience with education data standards like OneRoster, or with SIS and LMS integrations
- Experience with Next.js and the App Router
- Experience with Supabase and Row-Level Security for multi-tenant data isolation
- Familiarity with FERPA-aligned practices and handling sensitive student data
- Prior startup or founding experience, and a desire to build a company, not just a product
We’re not just hiring an engineer, we’re looking for a partner who wants to build something that matters. If you love the product, care about the schools and students it serves, and want a genuine hand in shaping the company from the ground up, we’d love to hear from you.
Benefits & conditions
$1 - $100,000 a year - Full-time, Contract
About the company
Lumira is an early-stage startup taking on a problem that’s held K-12 back for years. School districts are sitting on mountains of student data, but it’s scattered across systems that don’t talk to each other, and the people who need it most, teachers and administrators, rarely get it in a form they can actually use. We’re building an AI-native platform that brings all of that together and turns it into something educators can act on, so they can spend less time wrestling with their tools and more time helping kids. It solves real, everyday pain points inside districts, and it’s the kind of work that actually moves the needle for schools that need it.
This is a co-founding opportunity, not your typical job posting. You’d be getting in at the very beginning, building the product side by side with the founders, shaping the culture and the company as much as the code, and holding a true co-founder’s stake in what we create together. We’re looking for someone who genuinely loves this product and this mission, who wants to build something that doesn’t exist yet, and who’s excited to make a real difference in an industry that badly needs it. To be upfront about compensation, this is not a $100,000-a-year salaried role. We start with a trial period of a few months so both sides can be sure it’s the right fit, and we’ll agree on pay for that period before it begins. If we both feel good at the end of it and want to keep building this together, you’ll come on as a co-founder with a meaningful equity stake in the company. Because a portion of the platform depends on pulling data cleanly from the systems districts already use, deep, proven API and integration experience is the most important thing we’re looking for.
