Software Engineer

Hortus AI is a startup building an online marketplace to function as a Consumer Reports for AI, ranking 5000+ tools on 2000+ public interest use cases. Trellis entered open beta during fall 2025 in partnership with the GovAI Coalition, a base of 800+ local, state, and federal agencies united in the mission to promote responsible and purposeful AI in the public sector., We are recruiting for a Software Engineer to support development of the marketplace following our public launch. The main responsibilities will be to create and maintain data infrastructure as well as AI applications that support our continued growth. The successful candidate(s) may also propose novel projects to support this work and develop our product roadmap, including: AI risk assessment, algorithmic audits, model transparency & disclosure.

We expect proficiency in the following frameworks: React, Django, MongoDB.

Supervision

You will work directly under the CTO up to five days a week.

• At least 3 years of software engineering experience, including Python
• Excellent written communication
• Ability to work out of our Oakland, CA office.
