Job description

The Android Developer role is critical to expanding Chess.com’s mobile platform capabilities and supporting the company’s growth. This position directly impacts millions of chess players worldwide by developing and maintaining high-quality Android applications that deliver seamless gaming experiences. The role ensures Chess.com maintains its position as the #1 chess platform globally through technical excellence, innovation, and cross-platform code efficiency across the mobile ecosystem.

What you’ll do

  • Develop and maintain Chess.com’s flagship Android application to serve 185M+ global chess players with high-performance, scalable mobile experiences
  • Design and implement shared codebase architecture across our Android ecosystem to maximize development efficiency and code reusability
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with design, product management, data analytics, coaching, and titled player teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions and enhance user experience
  • Optimize application performance and user experience through code reviews, performance monitoring, and implementation of Android best practices
  • Contribute to technical architecture decisions for mobile platform scalability and maintainability as the user base grows
  • Maintain and improve development workflows to support rapid iteration and deployment cycles in a fully distributed team environment

Requirements

  • 3+ years of professional Android development experience with production applications
  • Expert-level proficiency in Kotlin and Android SDK development
  • Hands-on experience with Android Architecture Components including ViewModels, Room, and Navigation
  • Proficiency with asynchronous programming using Coroutines or RxJava
  • Experience with dependency injection frameworks including Dagger 2 or Hilt
  • Proven experience with Jetpack Compose for modern UI development
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in fully distributed/remote teams with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Track record of taking ownership of features and projects from conception to delivery
  • Experience shipping Android applications to Google Play Store

Nice to Have

  • Kotlin Multiplatform experience for cross-platform mobile development
  • Swift/iOS/React Native development experience for enhanced cross-platform collaboration
  • Gaming industry experience or passion for chess and gaming
  • Experience with performance optimization for applications serving millions of users
  • Familiarity with real-time applications and multiplayer gaming architecture
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks and CI/CD pipelines for Android
