Job description

The Director of Information Technology provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all technology systems across Compass Christian Church. This position is responsible for the planning, implementation, security, and ongoing management of the church’s technology infrastructure, enterprise applications, Rock RMS church management platform, Microsoft 365 environment, cybersecurity, telecommunications, and technical support across multiple campuses. The Director serves as both a strategic leader and hands-on technical expert, ensuring technology remains secure, scalable, reliable, and aligned with the operational and ministry objectives of Compass Christian Church., Strategic Leadership

  • Develop and execute a long-term technology strategy that supports the vision, mission, and operational goals of Compass Christian Church.
  • Partner with executive leadership to identify technology solutions that improve ministry effectiveness, organizational efficiency, and the weekend experience.
  • Establish and maintain IT policies, security standards, operational procedures, and technology best practices.
  • Lead technology budgeting, strategic planning, asset lifecycle management, and long-range infrastructure planning.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend innovative solutions that improve ministry and operational effectiveness.

Infrastructure & Systems

  • Provide strategic leadership for the church’s enterprise technology infrastructure, including networking, wireless systems, cloud services, telecommunications, servers, endpoint devices, enterprise applications, and audiovisual support systems.
  • Oversee the administration and optimization of Microsoft 365, including Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, and Entra ID.
  • Ensure all technology systems remain secure, reliable, scalable, and available across all campuses and ministry locations.
  • Oversee enterprise networking, wireless infrastructure, firewall security, storage systems, endpoint management, and telecommunications.
  • Manage security camera infrastructure, recording systems, and related technology supporting campus safety.
  • Develop and maintain disaster recovery, backup, business continuity, and technology lifecycle plans.

Enterprise Applications & Data (Rock RMS)

  • Serve as the primary architect, administrator, and developer of the church’s Rock RMS platform and related enterprise applications.
  • Lead the ongoing development, configuration, and optimization of Rock RMS to support ministry, operations, and data-driven decision making.
  • Design and develop workflows, business processes, Lava templates, custom pages, reports, dashboards, and automation.
  • Develop and maintain SQL queries, reports, and analytics to provide meaningful insights for church leadership.
  • Create and maintain integrations between Rock RMS and third-party applications (online giving, communications, identity management, websites, financial systems).
  • Oversee database architecture, security roles, permissions, data integrity, governance, and system performance.
  • Partner with ministry leaders to automate manual processes, strengthen communication, improve volunteer engagement, and enhance the guest experience.
  • Plan, test, and execute Rock RMS upgrades while maintaining compatibility with custom workflows and integrations.

Cybersecurity & Information Security

  • Develop and maintain a comprehensive cybersecurity strategy protecting church data, financial systems, staff information, and ministry operations.
  • Oversee identity management, multi-factor authentication, endpoint protection, vulnerability management, patch management, and network security.
  • Conduct technology risk assessments and implement proactive mitigation strategies.
  • Lead incident response protocols and coordinate security investigations when necessary.
  • Ensure compliance with security best practices, licensing requirements, and data governance standards.

IT Operations & Support

  • Provide leadership for day-to-day IT operations across all campuses and ministries, ensuring staff receive responsive, high-quality technical support.
  • Oversee user provisioning, onboarding, offboarding, licensing, hardware deployment, and technology asset management.
  • Develop documentation, training resources, and support processes that improve technology adoption throughout the organization.

Project & Vendor Management

  • Lead technology initiatives including infrastructure upgrades, campus expansion projects, cloud migrations, software implementations, audiovisual systems, and network deployments.
  • Develop project plans, timelines, budgets, and implementation strategies for major technology initiatives.
  • Manage relationships with vendors, contractors, consultants, and service providers, negotiating contracts to ensure responsible stewardship of church resources.
  • Maintain oversight of software licensing, hardware inventory, warranties, and annual technology expenditures.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, develop, and mentor Information Technology staff and volunteers.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, continuous learning, accountability, and exceptional customer service.
  • Establish departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectations.
  • Build strong relationships with ministry leaders to ensure technology effectively supports every ministry., * Support the mission and values of Compass Christian Church through excellent operational leadership and service.
  • Maintain consistent personal spiritual disciplines including prayer and study of God’s Word.
  • Seek opportunities to leverage technology that helps Compass Christian Church more effectively lead people to find and follow Jesus.

  • Build trusted relationships with staff and ministry leaders while providing responsive, solutions-oriented technology support.

Accountability

  • This individual reports directly to the Executive Pastor of Operations and Weekend Experience.
  • The Director is expected to support the mission, vision, and values of Compass Christian Church while providing exceptional leadership, stewardship, and operational excellence to the staff and ministries.

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based environment supporting multi-site campus operations.
  • Frequent interaction with church leadership, staff, volunteers, and external technology vendors.

Physical Demands

  • Sitting/Standing: Requires approximately 85% sitting and 15% standing or walking.
  • Movement: Occasional stooping, crouching, and reaching are required.
  • Lifting: Occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling of objects weighing up to thirty pounds.
  • Sensory: Regular talking, hearing, and seeing are required.

Requirements

  • A personal and growing relationship with Jesus Christ and agreement with the beliefs and values of Compass Christian Church.
  • Minimum of five years of progressive Information Technology leadership experience (ten or more years preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience leading enterprise technology operations, infrastructure, cloud services, and cybersecurity initiatives.
  • Advanced experience developing, administering, and maintaining Rock RMS, including workflows, Lava, SQL reporting, business process automation, security roles, integrations, and system architecture.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 enterprise environments, leading technology projects, managing budgets, and overseeing vendor relationships.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Rock RMS Expertise: Demonstrated ability to leverage Rock RMS as an enterprise ministry platform rather than simply a church management database.
  • Technical Proficiencies (Preferred): Experience with SQL Server development, Lava templating, REST API development, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Power Platform, and endpoint/mobile device management (MDM).
  • Infrastructure & Security: Understanding of enterprise networking, wireless infrastructure, cybersecurity, and disaster recovery planning in a multi-site organizational context.
  • Professional Certifications: Microsoft, Cisco, CompTIA, cybersecurity, or related professional certifications are preferred.
