Do you excel at writing robust C and object-oriented code, designing scripting pipelines, and translating complex development roadblocks into seamless user experiences? As Cerebral Staffing, we are seeking an innovative, collaboration-minded Software Engineer, Embedded OS to join our team supporting our client, John Deere, at their technology center in Cary, NC. If you are ready to design the next generation of embedded development tools for a global industry leader, we want to hear from you., Software Engineer, Embedded OS This is a high-visibility, intellectually stimulating 2+ year contract opportunity paying up to $68/hr, including 2 weeks of PTO. Operating fully onsite in Cary, NC, this role sits at the intersection of embedded systems and developer experience (DevEx). You will take charge of designing, developing, and supporting the tools, scripts, and build environments that optimize John Deere’s OpenRTOS-based embedded software pipeline, directly impacting hundreds of developers enterprise-wide., * Developer Tooling & Scripting: Develop, maintain, and optimize software tools and scripts to increase the efficiency, speed, and overall user experience of John Deere’s OpenRTOS-based embedded software development environment.

  • Developer Community Collaboration: Act as a key technical contact, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to provide agile, daily user support for the toolchain.
  • Next-Gen Innovation: Lead forward-thinking innovation efforts to define, design, and architect the next generation of software tools used across the entire embedded development community at John Deere.
  • Full-Cycle Embedded Alignment: Coordinate closely with design teams to ensure tooling aligns seamlessly with the complete embedded development lifecycle-from initial requirements gathering to physical machine validation.

Requirements

  • Professional Tenure: 3+ years of dedicated professional experience in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related software development field.
  • Programming Foundations: Proficient in at least one modern programming language (such as C#, C++, or Java), combined with demonstrated expertise in C and strong object-oriented software design principles.
  • Embedded Workflow Comprehension: A solid, foundational understanding of the embedded software development lifecycle, build systems, and verification methodologies.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Outstanding verbal and written communication skills (English), with a proven history of success in roles requiring daily collaboration and stakeholder support.
  • Education: Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Mechanical Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent experience.

What Makes You Stand Out

  • Hands-on professional experience working with GNU Make and Python scripting.
  • A solid technical understanding of vehicle networks, including CAN communication and UDS (Unified Diagnostic Services) protocols.
  • Experience delivering commercial-grade software products using structured Agile development methodologies.
  • An advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Computer Science or an Engineering discipline.
