Job description

We are seeking a skilled and versatile Program Developer with proficiency in both RPG and Java programming languages. The ideal candidate will have proven experience developing and maintaining applications on the IBM i (AS/400) platform. This role involves analyzing user requirements, designing robust solutions, and supporting business critical systems to ensure high availability, performance, and scalability.

  • Design, develop, and test, and maintain applications written in RPG IV/ILE, Free-Form RPG and Java.
  • Support and enhance legacy RPG programs and modern Java based applications.
  • Work with business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into functional specifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including business analyst, systems administrators and Production Control Team.
  • Participate in code reviews and enforce best practices in programming and application design.
  • Integrate IBM i applications with external systems via API’s, web services and middleware.
  • Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve application issues in a timely manner.
  • Assist with database design, optimization, and maintenance using DB2 for i.
  • Participate in system upgrades, backups, and disaster recovery planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • 5+ years of experience programming on the IBM i (AS/400) platform.
  • Proficiency in RPG IV, ILE RPG, Free-Form RPG, and CL programming.
  • Strong experience with Java, including object-oriented design ad enterprise application development.
  • Familiarity with DB2 for i and SQL.
  • Experience with source control and version management tools.
  • Solid understanding of the IBM i environment, including job scheduling, libraries, and user profiles.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience integrating IBM i with web services (REST/SOAP).
  • Familiarity with Eclipse, RDi (Rational Developer for i), or other modern development tools.
  • Exposure to Agile/Scrum development methodologies.
  • Understanding of modern DevOps practices and tools.
