Job description

A Fire System Designer is responsible for designing fire protection systems that comply with industry standards and regulations, ensuring the safety and protection of structures and their occupants. Designs could be for sprinkler, alarm, or specialty systems., * Design/layout fire protection systems in specialized CAD software based on AutoCAD platform, using project requirements and specifications to meet all NFPA and FM Global standards.

  • Read and interpret construction documents, including drawings, specifications and contracts for quality, code compliance and equipment compatibility.
  • Communicate with AHJ’s, contractors and other trades included in the job scope.
  • Conduct & document site surveys and jobsite visits to verify accuracy of completed work and ensure compliance with all applicable codes, standards & regulations.
  • Collaborate with internal team members to review scope sheets and requirements for each project before work begins and throughout the project.
  • Actively participate in predesign and review meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the coordination of permitting, inspections, listing of required materials and ensure projects meet the confirmed delivery date.
  • For sprinkler work, coordinate system piping with other building components and perform accurate hydraulic calculations for various fire sprinkler systems.
  • Adhere to company safety standards to ensure all duties are performed in a safe and professional manner.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned and applicable to various projects.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED is required.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in fire protection system design and/or Fire system design degree with 2+ years of experience functioning as a designer.
  • NICET Level II is required. NICET Level III, IV preferred. Ability to obtain/retain any other licenses required by national, state, and/or local laws to perform the design work needed.
  • RME-G strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD required; in addition, proficiency with HydraCAD & AutoSPRINK preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of industry codes such as IFC, NFPA, IBC and NEC with the ability to interpret & apply these standards to the design/construction process.
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings.
  • Strong math and computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Teams) and ability to solve basic math problems using geometry & algebra.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with an acute attention to detail with emphasis on accuracy and quality.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced service/construction environment both independently and as part of a product team.
  • Maintains a valid driver’s license, auto insurance and has the ability to pass a drug screen and background check.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, walking, and talking on the phone, attending virtual online meetings, and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and travel as needed.
