Job description

The Mobile Source Laboratory Division is seeking a motivated and mechanically inclined candidate to fill an Automotive Emission Test Specialist (AETS) II position for the Test Support Unit (TSU). The mission of TSU is to conduct exhaust emissions testing in support of the California Air Resources Board’s vehicle testing programs. TSU supports Agency’s emission testing programs for certification, in-use compliance, regulatory development, enforcement, emissions inventory and research utilizing test cells for testing light- and medium-duty vehicles, motorcycles, and all-terrain vehicles. These test cells follow strict guidelines provided by the California Code of Regulations (CRR) and the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR). The AETS II candidate will be responsible for testing light- and medium-duty vehicles on dynamometers, measuring exhaust emissions in accordance with the CCR and CFR, following established Standard Operating Procedures, and test plan requirements. Other responsibilities include: operating, maintaining, and throubleshooting laboratory test equipment, performing quality control system checks, setting up and driving test vehicles on a dynamometer, operating test automation system, and assisting project and test engineers with data acquisition. Verbal and written communication skills are essential in fulfilling daily work assignments and coordination activities for testing operations. Working Conditions This position is not currently eligible for telework. The incumbent will be required to report to the position’s designated headquarters location, as indicated on their duty statement, at their own expense. Effective July 1, 2025, the California Department of Human Resources (CalHR) implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025). PLP 2025 directs that each employee shall receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours PLP 2025 leave credits, monthly. The salary range(s) included in the job advertisement do not reflect the 3 percent reduction in pay.

  • Standard office environment (artificial lighting, controlled temperature, etc.).
  • Daily use of a personal computer, office equipment, and/or telephone.
  • Must be able to move/transport testing equipment weighing up to 30 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Duties require use of hearing protection and safety footwear when working on-site.
