Job description
- Provide guidance and oversight for the operation, maintenance, and performance optimization of critical mechanical systems, including direct experience with Cooling Distribution Units (CDUs).
- Ensure mechanical systems-including air-cooled chillers, Pumps, VFDs, Cooling Towers, RTUs, AHUs, and fan walls-run efficiently to minimize downtime and maintain SLA ranges.
- Develop operational best practices, routine inspection checklists, and procedures for cleaning, troubleshooting, and preventive maintenance of CDUs.
- Manage, monitor, and optimize cooling strategies and capacity to maintain strict temperature and humidity levels for all data center infrastructure.
- Act as the primary mechanical subject matter expert to diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve complex issues, including HVAC malfunctions and cooling failures.
- Lead and assist with root cause analysis on mechanical failures, implementing plans to correct and mitigate future issues.
- Develop, execute, and improve comprehensive preventive and predictive maintenance programs using specialized monitoring tools to assess system health.
- Provide process, policy, and compliance direction to ensure all systems meet safety, regulatory, and environmental standards (such as ASHRAE guidelines, local building codes, and OSHA requirements).
- Conduct regular audits and safety inspections of mechanical equipment, maintaining detailed records of performance, repairs, and upgrades.
- Offer high-level technical expertise, system design feedback, and operational guidance to on-site facilities personnel.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience in the maintenance and operation of critical mechanical systems, with a direct focus on data centers or mission-critical environments.
- Hands-on experience with Cooling Distribution Unit (CDU) operation, maintenance, calibration, and repair.
- Demonstrated expertise in troubleshooting and resolving complex mechanical issues in high-availability, high-pressure environments.
- Strong understanding of energy management, cooling efficiency practices, and CDU optimization.
- Proven ability to lead mechanical projects, diagnose system-level challenges, and implement long-term technical solutions.
- Excellent technical documentation skills to maintain detailed records of system performance, inspections, and operational upgrades.
Desirable Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field (equivalent military, trade school, or extensive hands-on experience in lieu of a degree will be considered).
- Familiarity with monitoring systems, building automation systems (BAS), predictive maintenance tools, and specialized CDU diagnostic software.
- Strong working knowledge of ASHRAE guidelines, local building codes, and OSHA safety requirements.
- EPA 608 Universal Certification.
