Job description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced IS/IT Subject Matter Expert (SME) III with a primary focus on Linux System Administration, complemented by strong proficiency in Windows Server environments. This role demands a deep understanding of both operating systems, their interoperability, and the strategic application of IT solutions to meet complex organizational and mission requirements. The successful candidate will serve as a top-tier technical resource, responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of critical IT infrastructure, ensuring high availability, security, and performance across hybrid environments., Linux System Administration:

  • Design, deploy, configure, and maintain complex Linux server environments (e.g., RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian) in physical, virtual, and cloud infrastructures.
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting, performance tuning, and capacity planning for Linux systems.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, file systems, and storage solutions.
  • Implement and manage system monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions.
  • Develop and maintain automation scripts (Bash, Python, Ansible, Puppet, Chef) for system provisioning, configuration, and task automation.

Windows Interoperability & Administration:

  • Administer and support Windows Server environments, including Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, and Group Policy.
  • Ensure seamless interoperability and integration between Linux and Windows systems (e.g., authentication, file sharing, networking).
  • Provide expertise in troubleshooting issues that span both Linux and Windows platforms.

Cybersecurity & Compliance:

  • Implement and enforce security best practices, including system hardening (STIGs), vulnerability management (ACAS/Nessus), and patch management.
  • Conduct security audits and ensure compliance with relevant DoD, industry, and organizational security policies.
  • Participate in incident response activities, providing expert analysis and remediation support.

Infrastructure & Operations:

  • Manage virtualization platforms (e.g., VMware, KVM) and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) on Linux.
  • Support cloud-based Linux instances (e.g., AWS EC2, Azure VMs) and related cloud services.
  • Collaborate with network, storage, and application teams to ensure optimal system performance and reliability.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation for system configurations, procedures, and architectural designs.

Mentorship & Leadership:

  • Serve as a Subject Matter Expert, providing technical guidance, training, and mentorship to junior administrators and cross-functional teams.
  • Lead complex projects and initiatives related to Linux and Windows infrastructure.
  • Contribute to strategic planning and architectural decisions for IT systems.

Schedule: 8-hour shift Monday to Friday within Core Hours of 07:00 - 17:00

Requirements

  • Active DoD Top Secret/ SCI Clearance (Minimum)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field. (Equivalent experience may be considered in lieu of a degree).

Current DoDD-8140/8570 certification (Required)

  • CompTIA Security+ CE
  • Relevant Linux certifications (e.g., RHCE, LPIC-2/3)
  • Relevant Windows Server certifications (e.g., MCSA, MCSE).
  • DoD 8570.01-M IAT Level II or higher (e.g., CySA+, CASP+).

One (1) or more of the following Operating System Certifications (Minimum)

  • Microsoft Server Certification
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)
  • CompTIA Linux+

5+ years of relevant experience (Minimum), Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience focused on advanced Linux system administration and 2+ years of significant Windows Server administration experience.

  • Expert-level proficiency in multiple Linux distributions (e.g., RHEL/CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian).
  • Strong experience with Windows Server administration (2016/2019/2022), Active Directory, and related services.
  • Proven experience with scripting and automation tools (Bash, Python, PowerShell, Ansible).
  • Extensive knowledge of networking concepts (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, routing, firewalls).
  • Experience with virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware vSphere, KVM).
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and managing Linux instances within them.
  • Demonstrated understanding of cybersecurity principles, system hardening (STIGs), and vulnerability management (ACAS/Nessus)

Having following skills is a PLUS:

  • Experience working with the Joint Staff (JS) and COCOMs.
  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical field.
  • Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Experience with enterprise monitoring solutions (e.g., Splunk, Nagios, Prometheus).
  • Knowledge of storage area networks (SAN) and network-attached storage (NAS) in Linux environments., * Which operating system certification do you have (RHEL, CompTIA Linux+, Microsoft Server Certification)

Experience:

  • Linux system administration: 5 years (Required)

License/Certification:

  • CompTIA Security+ CE (Required)
  • DODD-8140/8570 certification (Preferred)
