Job description

This is a 6-month, full-time contract position, ideal for an engineer who wants to move fast on a well-defined, high-impact build without a long-term commitment. Depending on fit and business need, there may be an opportunity to extend or convert - but the initial scope is a focused 6-month engagement.

What You’ll Build

  • A modern platform from the ground up - we’re designing a new stack (AWS, Node.js, Next.js) to replace decades-old processes with efficient, scalable solutions
  • AI-native development - we’re integrating AI coding tools like Claude Code to accelerate how we build
  • Automation and integrations - help modernize how DMVs, dealers, and partners interact through APIs and real-time systems
  • Scalable architecture - from day one, you’ll make decisions that define how our platform evolves during and beyond this engagement

What This Role Looks Like

  • Build and deploy production systems from day one
  • Architect and own solutions end-to-end within the contract scope
  • Move seamlessly between frontend and backend development
  • Solve complex integration problems with state DMV systems and legacy data
  • Collaborate directly with the VP of Engineering and Product
  • Help shape technical direction during a critical early build phase

Requirements

  • You take ownership and pride in delivering production-ready code, even on a defined timeline
  • You work well in dynamic environments and adapt quickly to new challenges
  • You’re curious about how AI can elevate development speed and quality
  • You communicate clearly and collaborate effectively across teams
  • You’re comfortable ramping quickly and delivering high-impact work within a fixed engagement window

What You Bring

Must-haves:

  • 5-7 years of professional software development experience
  • Strong JavaScript/TypeScript skills (Node.js, React, or similar)
  • API design and integration experience
  • Cloud experience (AWS preferred; Azure/GCP translates well)
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, evolving environment
  • Enthusiasm for AI-assisted development
  • Availability for a focused, full-time 6-month contract engagement

Nice-to-have:

  • Experience with Next.js
  • Familiarity with .NET/C# (our legacy stack - useful for migrations)
  • DevOps or infrastructure experience
  • Background in startups or small, agile teams
  • Prior contract/consulting experience delivering scoped work independently, * High school or equivalent (Required)

Experience:

  • Software development: 5 years (Required)

Benefits & conditions

$75 - $95 an hour - Temporary, Full-time, Contract, * Contract rate: $75-$95/hour, DOE

  • Engagement length: 6 months, full-time hours
  • Work location: Remote
  • Structure: Independent contractor - no benefits included, invoiced hourly or via agreed milestone schedule

Education: High school or equivalent (Required)

Experience: Software development: 5 years (Required)

Work Location: Remote

Pay: $75.00 - $95.00 per hour

Application Question(s):

  • This is a focused 6-month, full-time contract engagement. Are you currently available for full-time work during this window?
  • Pay is listed as $75 -95 DOE, is aligned with your expectations?
  • Which of these have you used professionally: AWS, Node.js, React/Next.js, TypeScript?
  • Have you used AI coding tools (Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor, etc.) in professional work?
  • Have you worked on API integrations with external/third-party systems?
  • In one sentence: what’s the largest system you’ve owned end-to-end?
