Job description

Please note that due to the nature of this role, all shortlisted candidates will be required to attend an in-person interview at our Bournemouth office.

How will you make an impact in this role? Take primary ownership of Trust Retail’s AWS cloud infrastructure, ensuring environments are performant, secure, cost-efficient, and highly available.

  • Guide the DevOps team, setting priorities, providing technical direction, and supporting the professional development of team members
  • Partner with the Solution Architect, Product Owner, BAs, and other technical stakeholders to design and deliver cloud infrastructure that supports new feature development and business growth
  • Champion the identification and remediation of technical debt across our cloud estate, balancing pragmatic short-term fixes with sustainable long-term improvements
  • Establish and uphold infrastructure standards, patterns, and best practices across all AWS environments, including networking, compute, storage, and security

This role includes participation in an on-call Rota, providing 24/7 support coverage for a one-week period approximately every 5 to 6 weeks (subject to Rota size at any given time).

  • On-call allowance: A fixed additional payment is provided for each on-call week, compensating for your availability during that period
  • Time Off in Lieu (TOIL): Where work is carried out significantly outside of standard working hours, TOIL will be accrued accordingly

We are committed to ensuring that out-of hours responsibilities are shared fairly and that colleagues are appropriately recognized for their time and commitment.

What We Expect of You, Day To Day:

  • Take primary ownership of Trust Retail’s AWS cloud infrastructure, ensuring environments are performant, secure, cost-efficient, and highly available
  • Own and evolve our Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices, ensuring all infrastructure is version-controlled, repeatable, and auditable
  • Ensure robust monitoring, alerting, and observability across all environments, enabling rapid detection and resolution of incidents
  • Coordinate disaster recovery planning and testing, ensuring our infrastructure meets defined RTO and RPO targets
  • Oversee CI/CD pipeline infrastructure, collaborating with development teams to improve deployment reliability, speed, and safety
  • Manage cloud cost optimisation initiatives, including rightsizing, reserved capacity planning, and the reduction of wasteful resource usage
  • Maintain a strong security and compliance posture across our AWS workloads, working with relevant stakeholders to adhere to industry standards and regulatory requirements
  • Evaluate and recommend new AWS services and tooling that could benefit the platform or reduce operational overhead

Requirements

  • 6+ years’ experience in cloud infrastructure or DevOps engineering roles, with at least 2 years in a lead or senior capacity
  • Extensive, hands-on experience with AWS, spanning core services such as EC2, VPC, RDS, ECS, S3, IAM, CloudFront, and Route 53
  • Solid experience with Infrastructure as Code, particularly Terraform, in production environments
  • Demonstrated experience designing and managing CI/CD pipelines using tools such as GitLab (preferred), GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar
  • Good understanding of cloud networking concepts, including VPC design, peering, load balancing, security groups, and DNS
  • Experience implementing and maintaining cloud security best practices, including IAM policy design, secrets management, and compliance tooling
  • Proficiency in scripting and automation using Python, Bash, or equivalent languages
  • Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring DevOps or infrastructure engineers
  • Good understanding of observability tooling, including AWS CloudWatch, and experience implementing meaningful alerting and dashboards
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to articulate infrastructure concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Desirable

  • AWS professional-level certification (e.g. AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional, or DevOps Engineer - Professional)
  • Familiarity with database infrastructure on AWS, including RDS and DynamoDB operational concerns
  • Experience working within regulated or PCI-DSS compliant environments
  • Exposure to service mesh, zero-trust networking, or advanced security architecture patterns

Personal Qualities

  • A collaborative leader who builds trust with both direct reports and senior stakeholders
  • Self-motivated, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues before they become problems
  • Analytical and detail-oriented, with good instincts for diagnosing complex infrastructure issues
  • Comfortable operating at both a strategic level and a hands-on engineering level as the situation demands
  • A clear sense of ownership and accountability for the reliability and quality of the systems under their care
  • Ability to manage competing priorities effectively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Committed to automation, repeatability, and continuously improving infrastructure quality
