Job description

Amazon Books is seeking a Software Application Engineering Manager III to lead Katalyst-Tech, a specialized automation and AI engineering team within the Risk, Operations, Success and Engagement (ROSE) organization. This leader will own the strategy and execution for scalable automation, operational tooling, AI-powered workflows, and application engineering solutions supporting Books Operations, Customer Service, Publishing, and Marketing organizations.

The ideal candidate will combine strong technical leadership with operational excellence, driving large-scale automation initiatives that improve productivity, reduce operational cost, and enhance customer experience across multiple partner teams.

Key job responsibilities

Lead and grow a team of Application Engineers, System Development Engineers, and RPA Developers supporting multiple Books organizations

Drive the design and delivery of scalable automation solutions, internal tools, workflow platforms, and AI-powered operational systems

Partner with Operations, Product, Program, and Engineering teams to identify automation opportunities and prioritize high-impact initiatives

Establish mechanisms for roadmap planning, project execution, dependency management, and operational reviews across multiple programs

Drive operational excellence through standardized development, testing, deployment, and support processes

Own delivery of GenAI and workflow automation initiatives leveraging AWS and internal Amazon technologies

Mentor engineers and technical leads while building a high-performance engineering culture focused on innovation and execution

Influence senior stakeholders through data-driven reviews, metrics, and long-term automation strategy

A day in the life

This role works closely with Operations, Product, Engineering, and Program teams across the Books organization to deliver scalable automation and AI-powered solutions. The leader will balance technical direction, program execution, stakeholder management, operational reviews, and people development while overseeing multiple concurrent initiatives.

About the team

Katalyst-Tech is part of the Automation & Analytics organization within ROSE. The team develops automation platforms, AI-enabled workflows, operational tooling, dashboards, and RPA solutions that support Books Operations, KDP Customer Service, Publishing, and Marketing teams. The organization focuses on improving operational efficiency, reducing manual effort, and building scalable internal solutions that deliver measurable business impact.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Experience designing, building, operating, and managing large-scale distributed systems or web services
  • Experience with one or more general-purpose programming languages such as Java, C/C++, C#, Objective C, Python, JavaScript, Ruby, or Go
  • Experience writing scripts and automating processes with an understanding of the complete deployment life cycle from design, build, test, deploy
  • 5+ years of engineering team management experience, * Experience in written and verbal communication with the ability to present complex technical information in a clear and concise manner to executives and non-technical leaders
  • Experience with AI/ML technologies
  • Experience with AWS technologies like Redshift, S3, AWS Glue, EMR, Kinesis, FireHose, Lambda, and IAM roles and permissions
  • Experience developing and executing/delivering product and technical roadmaps influencing internal and external stakeholders
  • Experience with robotic process automation platforms such as UiPath
