Job description

We help every AWS customer understand what they spent and why. As a Software Development Manager on the Insights Reporting team, you’ll lead the engineers assembling and delivering the billing reports that AWS’s largest customers rely on to understand their cloud costs - and you’ll regularly represent AWS in conversations with our largest enterprise customers when they need answers about their bill.

Our team owns the Cost and Usage Report (CUR 2.0) and four additional billing artifacts that give customers comprehensive visibility into their AWS spending. We process millions of billing events per second across every AWS service, and our customers range from startups watching their first bill to some of the largest cloud spenders in the world. When something doesn’t look right on a customer’s bill, we’re often the team in the room explaining it.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead a team of software engineers building large-scale data pipelines that process billing data for all of AWS
  • Represent your team directly with AWS’s largest customers during escalations and feature discussions
  • Drive improvements to data freshness, accuracy, and delivery speed - problems where hours matter and minutes are the goal
  • Partner with Product Management to define the next generation of cost visibility experiences
  • Own operational excellence for systems that customers depend on for financial decisions every day
  • Collaborate across AWS Billing, Cost Management, and service teams to ensure consistency in what customers see
  • Hire, develop, and retain strong engineers while fostering a culture of ownership and technical excellence- You might start the morning reviewing pipeline health dashboards before diving into a design review for a new data delivery mechanism
  • By midday, you’re on a call with an enterprise customer’s finance team explaining how their cost allocation tags flow through the billing report
  • In the afternoon, you’re working with your engineers on a technical approach to cut report delivery time, then syncing with a partner team on an upstream schema change
  • Some days you’re deep in operational response - tracing a data freshness delay across distributed systems and coordinating the fix across teams
  • You balance building for the long term with responding to immediate customer needs, and no two days look the same

A day in the life

  • You might start the morning reviewing pipeline health dashboards before diving into a design review for a new data delivery mechanism

About the team

  • We own the Cost and Usage Report (CUR 2.0) and four additional billing artifacts used by customers across every industry and size
  • We sit at the intersection of every AWS service - our pipelines consume billing events from across the entire AWS portfolio
  • We’re a team that values accuracy and operational rigor, but moves fast when customers need us
  • You won’t just build systems - you’ll be the person explaining them to customers who scrutinize every line on a complex bill
  • We solve problems at the intersection of distributed systems, data processing at scale, and customer trust
  • This is a space where accuracy is non-negotiable but speed is a competitive advantage

Requirements

3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers
