  • Safely migrate existing AWS resources without unnecessary recreation or service disruption.
  • Manage Terraform state operations, including resource imports, state moves, remote state dependencies, and backend configuration.
  • Establish standards for module structure, versioning, naming, documentation, and reuse.
  • Identify tightly coupled resources, dependencies, configuration drift, and migration risks.
  • Improve Terraform workflows across development, testing, validation, and deployment.
  • Integrate Terraform changes with Git-based workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Troubleshoot complex Terraform plans, provider behavior, state conflicts, and AWS infrastructure issues.
  • Partner with cloud, application, security, and engineering teams throughout the migration.
  • Document the new repository and module architecture and provide knowledge transfer to the client’s team.

Requirements

  • Deep, hands-on expertise with Terraform in production environments.
  • Strong experience designing and maintaining reusable Terraform modules.
  • Demonstrated experience reorganizing, refactoring, or migrating large Terraform codebases.
  • Experience migrating Terraform-managed resources between repositories, modules, or state files.
  • Advanced knowledge of Terraform state management, including:
  • terraform import
  • terraform state mv
  • moved blocks
  • Remote state and backend configuration
  • State locking
  • Resource addressing
  • Module refactoring
  • Provider and module versioning
  • Strong experience building and managing infrastructure in Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Understanding of AWS networking, IAM, compute, storage, security, and managed services.
  • Experience with Git, pull-request workflows, code review, and branching strategies.
  • Experience incorporating Terraform into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to work through complex infrastructure dependencies.
  • Ability to communicate technical risks, recommendations, and migration plans clearly.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote consulting environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Terraform Cloud or Terraform Enterprise.
  • Experience with tools such as Atlantis and GitHub Actions.
  • Experience with infrastructure security scanning or policy-as-code tools.
  • Experience supporting highly regulated, security-conscious, or enterprise AWS environments.
  • AWS or HashiCorp certifications.
  • Experience with Kubernetes or Amazon EKS is helpful but not required.

Benefits & conditions

$45 - $50 an hour - Contract, What Success Looks Like
