Job description

Job Introduction, British Transport Police have an opportunity for a GIS Technician to join the Technology Department. As a GIS Technician with BTP, you will provide maintenance and first and second line support for our GIS (Geographical Information Mapping System), playing a key role in the collection, analysis and management of geographic data to support projects and operational initiatives. You will help maintain accurate GIS databases, produce maps and visualisations, and work with multidisciplinary teams to ensure operational GIS and location intelligence needs are met. What you’ll be doing:

  • Maintaining and supporting the GIS system, including 1st and 2nd line support activities.
  • Carrying out monthly and quarterly OS map updates and assisting with GIS system upgrades, patches, performance and capacity monitoring.
  • Collecting, analysing and managing geographic data, maintaining GIS databases and producing maps and visualisations.
  • Collaborating with engineers, planners, environmental scientists and other stakeholders to deliver GIS support and effective geospatial solutions.

Requirements

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience and accredited to ITIL Foundation Level or higher.
  • Significant experience operating GIS software and producing cartographic output.
  • Significant experience providing application support and problem management to end users.
  • Knowledge of GIS software such as ArcGIS, QGIS or other geospatial tools, alongside knowledge of geospatial data formats and spatial analysis techniques., Vetting: Successful applicants will be required to pass Management Vetting and Security Clearance (SC) checks (5 years minimum UK residency required), including a full background and financial disclosure.
