Job description

The Forward Deployed Engineer is embedded directly at customer manufacturing sites, working shoulder-to-shoulder with the people who run operations. You’ll partner with subject-matter experts to find the workflows worth automating, help their teams turn early prototypes into secure and maintainable production applications, and raise the bar for how AI-assisted software gets built on-site.

This is a hands-on, customer-facing engineering role for someone who’s equally comfortable writing production code, using agentic development tools well, and explaining a data flow to a plant manager who has never opened a terminal. The applications you build on-site aren’t throwaway tools-they’re the groundwork for the operational intelligence layer Perleybrook is building for the factory floor.

What You’ll Do

  • Embed at customer sites and work with subject-matter experts to identify use cases and workflows that can be converted into AI-native applications.
  • Help customer teams move prototypes and MVPs into robust, secure, deployable applications.
  • Support and advance best practices in AI-assisted software engineering across the site-helping colleagues use agentic tools effectively while ensuring the resulting code is validated for correctness, security, and maintainability.
  • Apply strong standards for testing, documentation, access control, and deployment so that internal tools remain dependable as they move from proof of concept into routine use.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for applications, data flows, and shared infrastructure to support maintainability and knowledge sharing within the customer team.

Requirements

  • B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent industry experience also welcome.
  • 2+ years of professional experience.
  • Demonstrated experience building and maintaining software applications or internal tools in a professional or team setting.
  • Knowledge of React, Node.js, Go, and C/C++, and strong Python skills.
  • Strong understanding of algorithm analysis and design.
  • Proficiency with version control and code review, and working knowledge of SQL.
  • Experience working with data models, schemas, or integrations between systems.
  • Practical fluency with AI-assisted development tools-using them to generate, refactor, test, document, and review code while independently validating correctness and security.
  • Experience building agentic or AI-driven applications, or extending the capabilities of AI coding tools and workflows.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to work with non-engineers.

Preferred (Bonus)

  • Exposure to manufacturing, industrial, or otherwise regulated/operational environments.
  • Familiarity with cloud deployment, containerization, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Prior customer-facing, consulting, or embedded-delivery experience.

About the company

Perleybrook Labs is an industrial-AI company founded in 2013, headquartered in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, with an engineering team in Kochi, India. We’re best known for Flagman, a computer-vision platform that turns ordinary cameras into real-time safety, automation, and quality-control systems for manufacturing plants, warehouses, ports, and heavy-industry sites. We’re a member of the Techstars Industries of the Future accelerator, and our work sits at the center of the Industry 5.0 shift - where human expertise and advanced automation operate together on the plant floor.

As our customers modernize, they increasingly need more than vision systems: they need to turn expert, often undocumented, workflows into dependable software - and, over time, into a single connected system that understands how the whole plant actually runs. That’s the direction we’re building toward, and this role is where it starts.
