Job description

We are looking for two Cloud Application Modernisation & Agentic Architects (f/m/d) to own the end-to-end refactoring of Thinkproject’s application portfolio - 10 applications, 3 of which are major, mission-critical products. You will work as a pair, splitting application ownership between you, and you are expected to move fast: full refactoring across the portfolio within 6-8 months.

This is not a design-and-delegate role. You will roll up your sleeves, conduct the refactoring hands-on, and manage the project simultaneously. You are both the engineer and the project manager. You will consume the Service Catalog built by the Cloud Infrastructure & Agentic Architect and the networking foundation laid by the GCP & Network Agentic Architect - and turn them into modernised, cloud-native applications that are more reliable, more scalable, fully observable, and cheaper to run., Application Refactoring & Modernisation

  • Own the end-to-end refactoring of your assigned applications - from assessment and design through implementation and validation
  • Apply 12-factor app principles, event-driven architecture patterns, and cloud-native design to legacy codebases
  • Migrate workloads from on-prem and legacy infrastructure to GCP-native services: Cloud Run, GKE, serverless functions, managed databases, Pub/Sub
  • Design for scalability and on-demand resource consumption - cost efficiency is a success metric, not an afterthought
  • Use LLM-assisted tooling (Claude Code, OpenCode, or equivalent) to accelerate refactoring, code modernisation, and IaC generation

Project Management & Delivery

  • Own the migration plan for your applications: timeline, milestones, dependencies, risks, and rollback strategy
  • Track and report progress with precision - this is a time-boxed programme (6-8 months); delays must be surfaced early
  • Split application ownership with your paired architect: clear DRI per application, shared standards

Resilience & Rollback

  • Define and test rollback plans for every application before migration begins - you have crisis experience and you use it
  • Handle incidents during migration with calm, methodical rollback and root cause analysis
  • Ensure every migrated application meets reliability and observability standards before handover

Collaboration

  • Work closely with DevOps to integrate migrated applications into CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment workflows
  • Collaborate with SecOps and Compliance to ensure every migrated application meets security controls and certification requirements
  • Engage SRE teams to validate observability, SLO definitions, and alerting coverage post-migration
  • Consume and provide feedback on the Service Catalog - you are one of its primary consumers, * Month 2: Application portfolio assessed; ownership split agreed with paired architect; migration plan per application documented with milestones, dependencies, and rollback strategy
  • Month 4: First 4 applications refactored and in production (2 major + 2 add-on) - observable, scalable, cost-attributed
  • Month 6: 7-8 applications fully migrated; third major application on confirmed migration path or complete; observability standard adopted across migrated apps
  • Month 8: All 10 applications refactored and live on GCP; full observability in place; reliability and scalability improvements measured and reported; FinOps baseline established per application

Success is defined as: more reliability, more scalability, full observability, lower cost - across all 10 applications.

You’re probably NOT a fit if

  • You have designed cloud migrations but have not personally executed them in production
  • You need a stable architecture foundation before you start - legacy migration means working with what exists
  • You are a specialist in one cloud (Azure or GCP) but not both
  • You treat project management as someone else’s job
  • You have not handled a production rollback under pressure

What we offer

  • Multicultural team across 7 countries (Germany, France, UK, UAE, Spain, New Zealand, Australia)
  • Hybrid-first working
  • Continuous learning & certification budget
  • Open, inclusive, and high-ownership culture
  • Learning programmes Career growth Leadership access

Requirements

You have migrated complex, production applications from on-prem to cloud at scale, under time pressure, and lived to tell the story. Specifically:

  • Proven on-prem to cloud migration experience - at scale, under tight time constraints; you have delivered migrations, not just designed them
  • Strong proficiency across both Azure and Google Cloud Platform - networking, infrastructure, and PaaS layers
  • Deep hands-on experience with Docker, VMs, GKE and AKS node management, and serverless design patterns (Cloud Run, Cloud Functions, Azure Functions)
  • Strong 12-factor app knowledge - you apply it in code, not just reference it in presentations
  • Strong event-driven architecture experience - Pub/Sub, event streaming, async decoupling patterns
  • Crisis and rollback experience - you have handled production incidents during migrations, executed rollbacks cleanly, and conducted honest post-mortems
  • Proven focus on scalability and on-demand resource design - your migrations reduce cost, not just shift it
  • Proven hands-on agentic experience: must have used Claude Code, OpenCode, or equivalent LLM-based coding agents in real engineering workflows
  • Comfortable operating in ambiguity - 10 applications, varying legacy states, evolving requirements; you create clarity

Nice-to-Have (Bonus Skills)

  • Strong cloud networking experience (VPCs, firewall rules, private connectivity)
  • FinOps awareness - cost attribution and rightsizing post-migration
  • Experience with SecNumCloud or C5 compliance in a migration context
  • Prior experience as both engineer and delivery lead on the same programme

Soft Skills

  • Extreme ownership - you own the outcome for your applications, not just the tasks
  • Strong project management discipline: you track details, surface blockers early, and never let a deadline slip silently
  • Collaborative by default - you pair well with your counterpart architect and with DevOps, SecOps, SRE, and Compliance
  • Crisis-calm: you have been in production incidents during migrations and know how to lead through them
  • Intense technical curiosity - you follow the market, test new tools, and bring relevant innovations into the refactoring programme
  • Fact-driven communicator: you report progress with data, not narrative
