Job description

At TNO, you work on solutions that make a real societal impact - from accelerating the energy transition to enabling secure digital systems. Within this context, IT plays a critical role. As a Virtualization Engineer, you ensure that our infrastructure is stable, secure, and future-proof, while helping TNO transition to the Microsoft Azure cloud. #LI-Hybrid

You will join the ICT Infrastructure department, which delivers standardized IT services across the entire organization. The department operates based on ITIL4 principles and works in Agile teams, with a strong focus on reliability, scalability, and continuous improvement.

What will be your role?

As a Virtualization Engineer, you combine managing the existing VMware environment with building the Azure cloud platform. You directly impact the continuity, performance, and security of our IT landscape and play a key role in the cloud transformation.

You work in an Agile team where development and operations come together. Together with your colleagues, you design and implement Azure solutions and guide the migration of existing environments to the cloud.

Concretely, you will:

  • Manage and optimize the VMware virtualization environment (ESXi).
  • Design and implement solutions in Microsoft Azure (IaaS/PaaS).
  • Develop and execute migration strategies to Azure.
  • Set up landing zones and automate infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code (Bicep, Terraform, ARM, PowerShell).
  • Monitor system performance, security, and capacity.
  • Analyze and resolve incidents and complex issues.
  • Advise on changes, priorities, and impact.
  • Collaborate with Solution Architects on tooling and documentation.
  • Design and implement processes around Azure components (e.g., authorization, monitoring, cost management).
  • Report on system status and compliance (including ISO 27001).

The team

You will be part of an Agile infrastructure team consisting of specialists in cloud, virtualization, and IT operations. The team is part of a broader infrastructure department of approximately 30 professionals. Together, you are building a modern hybrid cloud environment that supports a diverse internal customer base - from researchers to business units.

What we expect from you

You are an engineer who takes ownership of your environment and enjoys working at the intersection of operations and innovation. You are comfortable switching between maintaining stability and driving improvements within an Agile way of working.

Requirements

  • Bachelor-level working and thinking ability, preferably in ICT / Computer Science.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Virtualization Engineer or Cloud Engineer.
  • Proven experience with VMware (ESXi) and Microsoft Azure.
  • Experience managing virtualized and cloud infrastructures.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Bicep, Terraform, ARM, PowerShell).
  • Experience working in Agile teams and familiarity with ITIL4.
  • Strong problem-solving skills (incident and root cause analysis).
  • Good communication skills in both Dutch and English.
  • Willingness to work outside office hours when needed.
  • A valid driver’s license (due to multiple data center locations).
