Job description

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will be responsible for architecting, implementing and deploying software services from end to end. You’ll produce clean, scalable, and reusable code to build products which will have a big impact on our customers.

You will have the opportunity to work with a modern, event-driven architecture running on containerised cloud infrastructure, whilst guiding and mentoring more junior engineers in the team.

Our Tech

This role will be building with Java and Kotlin, leaning heavily on event-driven architectures to move money reliably at scale. Services will run in containers on EKS, backed by both SQL and NoSQL databases on AWS.

If you’re deep in the Java and Spring ecosystem (Spring Boot, Spring REST, Spring Data, resilience patterns like circuit breakers), you’ll feel right at home. Experience with event-streaming and messaging tools like Kafka, EventBridge, SNS or SQS, Kubernetes tooling such as Helm, or infrastructure as code with Terraform will help you ramp up even faster.

What Excites You

  • Contributing towards the design, delivery and deployment of large scale, complex projects which are used heavily by thousands of people with high throughput.
  • Using modern technology like event-driven microservice architecture and container orchestration on AWS.
  • Mentoring more junior members of the team to help support their growth and development and help scale the team by leading on technical interviews.
  • Being a subject matter expert on technology and domain-specific problems, and taking ownership of software services from end to end.
  • Improving responsiveness and overall performance of our web services.
  • Getting stuck into problems at the heart of how money actually moves, in the payments space.

Requirements

  • Proficiency in at least one of Java, or Kotlin, with a strong track record of architecting and developing new services and features end to end.
  • Experience building applications with event-driven architectures.
  • Familiarity with containerisation (e.g. EKS or similar).
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms, ideally AWS.
  • Working knowledge of both SQL and NoSQL databases.
  • The ability to take ownership of design and architecture of large scale systems and developing API heavy software solutions without the need for guidance.
  • A passion for promoting software engineering best practice, guiding and mentoring more junior engineers to deliver clean, scalable, and reusable code.
  • Proactively contributing to the continual improvement of our engineering processes.

Bonus points for:

  • Deep experience with Java and the Spring ecosystem (Java 17+, Spring Boot, Spring REST and Spring Data, resilience patterns such as circuit breakers).
  • Experience with event-streaming and messaging technologies (e.g. Kafka, EventBridge, SNS, SQS).
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes tooling such as Helm.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code, ideally Terraform.
  • Experience within the payments domain.

Even if you do not meet all of the above requirements but still think you would be a good fit for the role we would still encourage you to apply.

About the company

Runa is pioneering a first-of-its-kind payment rail that enables the seamless, global money movement at scale. The Runa API empowers thousands of businesses to make payments to 5 billion+ consumers in 190+ countries instantly to cards, wallets, bank accounts and gift cards.
