About Uber Data Center Management, Data Center Engineering

  1. The Data Center Management team is a nimble and efficient team of technical & operations subject matter experts focused on delivering and maintaining Uptime
  2. The Data Center Engineering team provides management of physical systems within On-Premise & Cloud data centers, which includes cooling, power, structured cabling & physical network, and monitoring / alerting What the Candidate Will Need / Bonus Points —- What the Candidate Will Do —- What You’ll Do Data Center Engineering, Strategic Engineering
  3. Collaborate with Network Engineering to understand future structured cable requirements and deployments
  4. Drive structured cable innovation within Uber’s data centers and across the industry
  5. Review structured cable designs for feasibility & operational uptimeData Center Engineering, Design & Retrofit
  6. Prepare conceptual design documents illustrating structured cabling & physical networking systems and topology requirements
  7. Prepare structured cabling & networking system design criteria and specifications for data center retrofits
  8. Prepare cost analysis and business cases for structured cable build-outs, retrofits and infrastructure improvements
  9. Review structured cable test scripts, procedures, and results
  10. Travel to data center sites to oversee structured cabling system retrofits, testing and network turn-upData Center Engineering, Technical Operations
  11. Assist in managing relationships with data center service providers, contractors, manufacturers and suppliers
  12. Drive technical operations innovation and efficiency within Uber’s data centers
  13. Collaborate with the on-site data center operations to improve workflow efficiency of structured & patch cable systems, testing & troubleshooting
  14. Review with partner teams to ensure continued service delivery during structured cable & physical network system retrofits and preventive maintenances
  15. Review structured cable system operation configurations for compliance with SLAs
  16. Development and execution of structured cable & physical network system preventive maintenances
  17. Provide communication to internal and external teams about structured cable & physical network system operation and limitations, as well as scheduled activities and maintenances
  18. Development and continuous improvement of MOPs, SOPs, Change Management requests, etc. for Uber procedures to external companies
  19. Participation with internal and external teams of potential data center structured cable & physical network service impacts and high risk activity
  20. Respond as-needed during data center outages and incidents
  21. Collaborate and support partner teams to assist with power, cooling and network connectivity outages
  22. Participate in incident review meetings, root cause analysis investigations and discussions, 34. Wet-side design and distribution (chilled and condenser water systems)
  23. CRAC and CRAH design and distribution
  24. Understanding of mechanical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
  25. Knowledge of industry standards, ASHRAE, mechanical / building codes, and energy codes
  26. Power Distribution: Three-phase, conditioning, and distribution from utility to chip
  27. Understanding of mission critical power distribution, UPS, PDU and various data center electrical topologies
  28. Understanding of electrical design and operational changes with varying rack power density
  29. Knowledge of industry standards, NEC, building codes, energy codes, and life safety fire alarm standards (e.g. NFPA)
  30. Cross functional knowledge of mission critical systems, strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  31. Exposure to load management within mission critical facilities
  32. Improve efficiency of data center technical systems (power, cooling, & structured cabling)—- Preferred Qualifications —- Non-Technical
  33. Collaborate and work with internal teams, Data Center Engineering & Operations staff, and carry out responsibilities with guidance from Senior Staff

Requirements

  1. B.S. in mechanical, electrical or architectural engineering degree
  2. Minimum 8 years of professional experience in data center design, construction and operations (RCDD is preferred)
  3. Travel to data center sites (25% to 50%) Technical Deep Domain Experience
  4. Structured Cabling & Networking Distribution: Basics of all layers plus cabling, optics and supporting infrastructure
  5. Understanding of mission critical structured cabling distribution that coincides with network topologies
  6. Understanding of various components within structured cabling systems and design
  7. Knowledge of industry standards, BICSI and RCDD standardsEntry Level Domain Experience
  8. Cooling: Theory, methods and efficiency (PUE)
  9. Understanding and working knowledge of mechanical air-side and water-side systems for mission critical environments and various data center HVAC topologies, 46. Strong communication, organization, and project management skills
  10. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to streamline the communication process for greater efficiency between teams
  11. Ability to self-serve, investigate, and execute with minimal instruction
  12. Strong crisis management, problem solving skills, and ability to work under pressure
  13. Ability to work flexible hours and be accessible 7x24

Benefits & conditions

For San Francisco, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $180,000 per year - USD $200,000 per year.

For Sunnyvale, CA-based roles: The base salary range for this role is USD $180,000 per year - USD $200,000 per year.

For all US locations, you will be eligible to participate in Uber’s bonus program, and may be offered an equity award & other types of comp. All full-time employees are eligible to participate in a 401(k) plan. You will also be eligible for various benefits.
