Job description

Search Group Recruitment is supporting a well-established, technology-led organisation in the appointment of a Platform Operations Engineer.

This is an opportunity to join a collaborative technology function responsible for the security, resilience and performance of business-critical platforms and cloud services. You will support a predominantly Microsoft-based environment, working across Azure, Microsoft 365, Entra ID, endpoint management, infrastructure security and operational service improvement.

The position would suit an infrastructure, cloud or platform support professional who is comfortable working within a structured IT service environment and wants to develop further across cloud operations, automation and cybersecurity.

The role

As a Platform Operations Engineer, you will help ensure the organisation’s technology platforms remain secure, stable and available.

Working closely with Application Support, Product Engineering, Security, Risk and Compliance teams, you will support day-to-day platform operations, incident resolution, monitoring, maintenance, security remediation and continuous improvement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Administering and supporting Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, Entra ID and associated cloud services.
  • Supporting endpoint management and security services, including device configuration, compliance policies, application deployment and endpoint protection.
  • Maintaining server, platform and infrastructure environments across production and non-production systems.
  • Supporting the implementation of platform security controls, secure configurations and system-hardening standards.
  • Assisting with vulnerability remediation and wider security improvement initiatives.
  • Delivering security patching, platform upgrades and planned maintenance activities.
  • Supporting the implementation of CIS Benchmarks and recognised security best practices.
  • Monitoring platform health, availability and performance, responding to alerts and service issues.
  • Investigating and resolving platform, infrastructure and security-related incidents.
  • Supporting root-cause analysis, problem management and post-incident reviews.
  • Ensuring operational changes are delivered through agreed change management processes.
  • Supporting disaster recovery testing, resilience exercises and business continuity activities.
  • Using PowerShell or similar technologies to automate operational tasks and improve service reliability.
  • Working with internal technical teams, managed service providers and third-party suppliers.
  • Producing and maintaining technical documentation, support procedures and operational runbooks.
  • Participating in planned out-of-hours maintenance and incident response activities when required.
  • Contributing to the platform operations roadmap and identifying opportunities for continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Experience supporting Microsoft Azure environments.
  • Experience administering Microsoft 365 and Entra ID.
  • A good understanding of Windows Server administration.
  • Experience supporting cloud-hosted infrastructure and business-critical platforms.
  • Knowledge of secure configuration, system hardening and security improvement activities.
  • Experience working within structured IT service management processes, including Incident, Change and Problem Management.
  • Knowledge of monitoring, alerting and service management tools.
  • Experience using PowerShell or a similar scripting technology.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively across technical and non-technical teams.

Desirable experience

Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:

  • Microsoft Defender technologies and Microsoft Secure Score improvements.
  • Vulnerability remediation or security improvement programmes.
  • Azure Monitor, Log Analytics and related monitoring technologies.
  • Microsoft SQL Server environments.
  • VMware or other virtualised infrastructure technologies.
  • CIS Benchmarks, NCSC guidance or comparable security frameworks.
  • Disaster recovery and resilience testing.
  • Networking, firewalls and connectivity troubleshooting.
  • Working within a regulated or highly governed environment.

Personal qualities

The successful candidate will be:

  • Analytical, methodical and solutions-focused.
  • Calm and organised during incidents and service disruptions.
  • Comfortable prioritising competing operational demands.
  • Detail-oriented, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Self-motivated and committed to continuous improvement.
  • Able to build effective working relationships across multiple teams.
  • Interested in developing their knowledge of cloud technology, platform operations, automation and security.

As the organisation operates within a regulated environment, you will also be expected to act with integrity, care, skill and diligence, while maintaining appropriate professional and customer-focused standards.
