Job description

The Prequalification Specialist is responsible for working directly with students in grades 7-10 at both Crisfield High School, Washington High School, and the Somerset Intermediate School to guide them through the Maryland Next Generation Scholars (NGS) Guaranteed Access Grant (GA) Prequalification process. This position ensures eligible students complete all required steps to financially prequalify for the GA, including creating MDCAPS accounts, completing required forms, and submitting accurate tax and income documentation. The Prequalification Specialist will collaborate with families, school staff, and program leadership to meet all timelines and compliance requirements set by the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC)., · Serve as the primary point of contact for NGS students in grades 7-10 regarding GA prequalification requirements.

· Maintain an updated roster of eligible students at all three school sites and track their progress through the prequalification process.

· Assist students in creating and activating their MDCAPS accounts and securing their MHEC ID numbers.

· Collect and review required documentation, including:

o NGS Prequalification Participation Agreement

o Dependent/Independent Student Verification Worksheet

o Verification of Non-Filing Form (if applicable)

o Tax/income documentation for the 2022 base year (IRS Tax Transcript, Signed 1040, W-2s, 1099s)

o Proof of independent student status (if applicable)

· Provide individualized and group support to students and families to explain documentation requirements, income eligibility criteria, and deadlines.

· Troubleshoot missing, incomplete, or inaccurate documents in coordination with families and MHEC staff to ensure timely resubmission.

· Accurately complete and submit the NGS(GA) Prequalification Google Form for each student, including uploading all required documentation.

· Monitor MHEC communications to track determination status for each student, relay updates to families, and record outcomes in program records.

· Collaborate with the Project Director and other program staff to integrate prequalification activities into broader NGS programming.

· Maintain confidentiality of student and family information in compliance with MHEC and program policies.

· Uphold professional standards in communication, conduct, and appearance at all times.

Requirements

· Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, counseling, or related field preferred; relevant experience will be considered.

· Experience working with middle and high school students, particularly in college access or financial aid support.

· Strong knowledge of documentation requirements for state or federal aid programs preferred.

· Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage detailed records across multiple sites.

· Strong interpersonal and communication skills for working with diverse students, families, and school staff.

· Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and secure document management.

· Commitment to increasing college access for underrepresented students.
