Job description

  • Design and implement Android system services and framework extensions specifically for Camera HAL
  • Define service ownership boundaries and IPC architecture using Binder/AIDL.
  • Review and optimize service startup dependencies and lifecycle management.

Security, SELinux & Permissions

  • Define Android security architecture and least-privilege access models.
  • Create and maintain robust SELinux policies.
  • Design secure permission models and privileged application strategies.
  • Review system components for compliance with Android security best practices.

Boot Flow & System Initialization

  • Architect complete Android boot sequences from bootloader to application launch.
  • Optimize boot performance and startup reliability.
  • Define initialization flows involving init.rc, native daemons, services, and framework components.

Provisioning & Device Management

  • Design factory provisioning and first-boot experiences.
  • Architect enrollment, device configuration, identity management, and secure onboarding flows.
  • Define manufacturing and field provisioning strategies.

OTA & Software Lifecycle Management

  • Design OTA update architecture, including A/B updates and rollback strategies.
  • Define software release, upgrade, and software maintenance processes.
  • Ensure software update reliability, security, and fleet-scale manageability.

Technical Leadership

  • Perform architecture reviews and design assessments.
  • Guide teams toward robust solutions rather than short-term fixes.

Requirements

We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Android Systems Engineer to lead the design and evolution of Android-based embedded systems. This position is at the client offices, 5 days a week in downtown San Francisco. This role is intended for an engineer who understands how Android platform components should be architected from the ground up.

The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise across the Android software stack and can make sound architectural decisions spanning boot flow, security, provisioning, OTA strategy, system services, permissions, SELinux policies, and Camera HAL integration. The candidate should be capable of defining scalable, maintainable platform designs and guiding teams through implementation., * BS/MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.

  • 10+ years of Android platform and embedded Linux development experience.
  • Deep knowledge of Android architecture

  • Device provisioning

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience with Qualcomm platform.
  • Camera subsystem expertise including sensor integration, ISP pipelines, and Camera HAL3.
  • Knowledge of Verified Boot, AVB, TrustZone, TEE, and secure provisioning.
  • Familiarity with CTS/VTS/GTS certification processes.
  • Experience supporting large-scale commercial Android products.
