Job description
State Fund has an exciting opportunity for an Information Technology Specialist II (Senior DevOps Engineer) in our Network Operations division within the Application Support Unit. In the role of DevOps Engineer, you will be responsible for code builds and deployments to pre-production and production environments in support of State Fund applications. Responsibilities include technical and management escalation, reporting, monitoring, and ownership of pre-production and production deployments and incidents. Under the supervision of the Information Technology Manager I, the incumbent has an expert level of knowledge and experience in the Information Technology field to provide automation, support, planning, configuration, installation, troubleshooting and testing for hardware and software upgrades and deployments. As a team and project lead, the incumbent will perform complex analysis to identify the best IT solutions to troubleshoot escalated incidents and remediate security vulnerabilities on servers and implementation of new environments. The successful candidate will perform complex technical activities as relates to support of multiple environments including Production level troubleshooting and support while using the latest technology and tools., The Senior DevOps Engineer will be a lead on the DevOps team and is responsible for system administration areas including monitoring, installation, configuration, maintenance, operations, and architecture of AWS cloud environments and on premise environments. The candidate will work within a team in implementing and maintaining all production and pre-production environments by implementing tools and automation. Looking for a candidate with exceptional DevOps skills and should have extensive knowledge and experience in implementing solutions and tools to maintain and grow all application environments. Most importantly, the right individual will possess a positive, âcan-doâ attitude and a passion for delivering technical solutions in a fast-paced environment. In addition, the individual will be dedicated, independent, and collaborate at a high level in ensure the stability and reliability of infrastructure and applications running in the AWS Cloud and on premise environments. Advanced experience working in AWS environments will be expected while leading the implementing of improvements and advancements. Working Conditions The successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment. Selected candidate(s) hired may be required to attend in-person Onboarding at our Vacaville office with expenses for attendance paid by State Fund., Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employeeâs monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. - Measurement, optimization, and tuning of system performance and ensuring that systems will run reliably and are highly available in a 24/7 production environment.
- Automate system and application monitoring using monitoring and automation tools

- Design and deploy AWS solutions using AWS services (i.e. EC2, S3, Glacier, ELB, RDS, IAM, Route 53, VPC, Auto Scaling, Cloud Watch, Cloud Trail, Cloud Formation, Security Groups, API Gateway, SSM, Route table, Endpoint service, etc.)
- Provision, management, and day-to-day operations of AWS environments
- Implement alarms / alerts / notifications using AWS services (i.e. Cloud Watch)
- Implement AWS Multi AZ accounts for HA and DR
- Design AWS infrastructure that minimize operational costs through push-button deployment at scale with near-zero downtime.
- Develop and maintain configuration management solutions.
- Provide technical guidance, knowledge transfers and mentorship to State Fund internal engineering
peers as required and lead technical staff responsibilities.
- Server Maintenance based on updates, system requirements, data usage, and antivirus requirements.
- Responsible for the design, implementation, and support of large scale web farm infrastructure across multiple data centers supporting the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) offering.
- Help engineering implement new technologies in development for future production deployment.
- Working with team to analyze and design infrastructure witch includes virtualization, clustering, database, disaster recovery, and geographic redundancy.
- Triage and provide technical solutions to environment related issues encountered by new and existing applications
- Support developers with change requests, uptime, and performance related issues.
- Documentation of work in regards to bug reports, systems analysis, application monitoring, and common task reporting
- Author internal documentation, such as environment diagrams, installation/configuration documents and release notes.
- Assist in establishing and implementing configuration management program and policies.
- Troubleshoot and debug environment and infrastructure problems found in the production and non-production environments.
- Collaborating with software developers, engineers, and operations teams.
Requirements
Do you have experience in AWS?, The incumbent will consistently demonstrate complex, expert ability in environment technical design; as well as, have a broad understanding of the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of pre-production and production environments. The incumbent collaborates effectively with other business and technical experts to secure the resources, expertise, and approvals to assist the Information Technology Manager I in the implementation of large scale information technology (IT) solutions., In addition to evaluating each candidateâs relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate: We are looking for individuals with the following experience and abilities:
- Advanced DevOps Engineer in Linux and Windows environments including a strong background in automation and CI/CD in deploying JAVA and .NET based applications
- Advanced Experience in installation, setup, and management of application and web servers (i.e. IIS, Apache, JBoss) both on premise and cloud (i.e. AWS, Azure, Google Cloud)
- Advanced Experience with ADS (Azure DevOps Server) and automated Pipelines
- Advanced Experience with build management and automation tools (i.e., Jenkins, Ansible, etc)
- Advanced Knowledge of best practices, processes and tools required to support continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) within an Agile and Waterfall Methodology
- Advanced Knowledge of Secure Software Development Lifecycle
- Advanced Knowledge and experience in operating systems security
- Strong analytical problem solving and testing skills/methodology
- Willingness to work in a team environment and contribute on a daily basis
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and efficiently, analyze situations, identify and solve technology problems and develop effective business solutions
- Ability to handle concurrent assignments and learn difficult concepts quickly
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment
- Ability to work after production hours and on the weekends as necessary
