Job description

Working across the full technology stack, you will build and enhance modern web-based solutions using PHP, Laravel, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, relational databases, APIs and associated DevOps technologies, helping deliver reliable, secure and scalable digital services that support key business outcomes.

What does the average day look like?

Join a skilled and collaborative team responsible for delivering and supporting bespoke applications across Network Rail. We develop innovative digital solutions, integrations and data services that support operational and business functions nationwide. Working across a diverse technology landscape, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to new developments, modernise existing systems and help drive the continuous improvement of our digital capabilities.

Who are we looking for?

  • As a Full-Stack Software Engineer within the Business Systems team, you will be responsible for designing, developing, supporting and continuously improving bespoke digital solutions used across Network Rail. Working within a collaborative Agile environment, you will contribute to the delivery of modern web applications, integrations and business process solutions that support critical operational and corporate functions.

  • You will develop front-end interfaces using HTML, JavaScript and CSS alongside server-side applications built using PHP and Laravel. The role includes working with relational databases including MariaDB, MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server, developing and consuming REST and SOAP-based APIs, and supporting secure integrations between business systems.

  • You will also contribute to the management and maintenance of the supporting application infrastructure, working with technologies such as NGINX, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), Systemctl and version control platforms including Git and GitHub to support application deployment, release management and operational support activities.

  • Working closely with stakeholders, analysts and end users, you will translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions, ensuring applications remain performant, accessible, secure and aligned with business needs.

  • You will be expected to contribute across the full software development lifecycle, including requirements gathering, solution design, development, testing, implementation, support and continuous improvement. The role also involves modernising legacy applications, developing reusable components and standards, investigating emerging technologies, and supporting the adoption of modern engineering practices across the team.

  • Experience of web accessibility standards, cloud technologies, workflow-driven solutions, data processing, application integrations and modern software engineering practices will be advantageous.

Requirements

  • Degree qualification in Computer Science, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Experience working with web technologies (HTML, JavaScript and CSS)
  • Full software development lifecycle experience, including experience of the planning, analysis, design, implementation, and maintenance needed to deliver a digital software project.
  • Experience with web service protocols (SOAP, REST and JSON)
  • Experience with NoSQL and relational databases, e.g. MongoDB, SQL Server, MySQL including database design and use of database tools such as Mongoose for MongoDB.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, having the ability to effectively communicate with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to adapt and stay on top of expanding technologies and engineering trends.

Desirable

  • Experience in cloud computing platforms (Azure, OCI, AWS).
  • Experience with PHP development frameworks (Laravel etc).
  • Understanding of Agile software engineering principles and methodologies (Scrum/LEAN).
  • Knowledge of low-code platforms.
  • Formal testing qualification / certifications in foundation level software testing (e.g. ISTQB® Certified Tester Foundation Level).
