Job description

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Network Engineer to configure, administer, monitor and support IBM z/OS mainframe network environments. The successful candidate will provide technical support for business-critical network services, contribute to internal and client projects, and ensure that all systems comply with organisational and regulatory requirements., * Configure, administer and maintain IBM z/OS mainframe networking software.

  • Install, configure and support network-related third-party system software.
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting for mainframe networking incidents during regular working hours.
  • Participate in an out-of-hours on-call support rota when required.
  • Diagnose network incidents, identify root causes and implement effective resolutions.
  • Act as the Mainframe Networking subject-matter resource for internal and external projects.
  • Support network upgrades, migrations, implementations and infrastructure-transformation initiatives.
  • Monitor the availability, capacity and performance of mainframe networking components.
  • Identify performance issues and initiate appropriate corrective or preventive actions.
  • Manage changes in accordance with established change-management and production-control processes.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation, operating procedures, implementation plans and support guides.
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, application, security, operations and project teams.
  • Ensure compliance with local, regional and global policies, processes and procedures.
  • Maintain adherence to applicable security, audit, risk and regulatory requirements.
  • Take complete ownership of assigned incidents, problems, changes and projects through to closure.

Required Technical Skills

The candidate should possess working knowledge across most of the following areas, with advanced expertise in several:

  • IBM z/OS mainframe networking
  • TCP/IP and associated networking products and protocols
  • SNA and VTAM
  • APPN and Enterprise Extender
  • Connect:Direct and other managed file-transfer products
  • Session-management products such as:
  • TPX
  • Teleview
  • CL/SuperSession
  • Network-monitoring and management products such as:
  • IBM NetView
  • NetMaster for TCP/IP
  • Mainframe print-server products such as VPS
  • Network-performance monitoring and troubleshooting
  • Production support, incident management and problem management
  • Change, release and configuration-management processes
  • Technical documentation and operational procedures

Requirements

This role requires a self-motivated professional who can manage multiple support and project activities, troubleshoot complex networking issues and take complete ownership of tasks through to resolution., * Relevant experience supporting IBM z/OS mainframe networking environments.

  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical abilities.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working with limited supervision.
  • A completer-finisher mindset, ensuring that tasks and projects are fully delivered and appropriately documented.
  • Strong organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage several activities simultaneously and balance production support with project responsibilities.
  • Ability to prioritise effectively in a business-critical production environment.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Clear and confident communication with technical teams, business stakeholders and senior management.
  • Strong written and spoken English skills.
  • Willingness to participate in out-of-hours and on-call support when required.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience working in a large-scale enterprise, banking or other regulated environment.
  • Exposure to highly available and business-critical mainframe infrastructure.
  • Experience supporting infrastructure upgrades, migrations and transformation projects.
  • Familiarity with ITIL-based incident, problem and change-management practices.
  • Experience working with geographically distributed technical and business teams.
