Job description

Underground Utility Maintenance Technician (CDL Class A)Build Your Career Maintaining Critical Utility Infrastructure

We are seeking a dependable, safety-focused Underground Utility Maintenance Technician to join our field operations team. In this role, you will perform maintenance, repairs, and construction on an underground steam distribution system serving commercial and industrial customers.

This position is ideal for candidates with experience in underground utilities, heavy civil construction, industrial maintenance, pipeline construction, pipefitting, mechanical trades, or excavation. If you enjoy working outdoors, operating heavy equipment, and solving mechanical challenges as part of a skilled team, we’d like to hear from you.

What You’ll Do

  • Perform maintenance, repairs, and installation of underground steam distribution systems.
  • Cut, thread, fit, install, and repair piping systems.
  • Install, replace, and rebuild valves, steam traps, fittings, insulation, and related equipment.
  • Assist with excavation, trenching, shoring, and confined space work.
  • Perform traffic control and flagging duties to ensure safe work zones.
  • Operate hand tools, power tools, and heavy construction equipment safely.
  • Read work orders, utility drawings, and construction plans.
  • Respond to planned maintenance and emergency repair work.
  • Follow OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and environmental standards.
  • Complete additional duties as assigned.

Welding Opportunity

Qualified employees who are certified to weld pressure piping in accordance with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX may perform pipe welding assignments and receive premium pay for certified welding work., * Lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.

  • Bend, kneel, crouch, climb, crawl, twist, and work in awkward positions.
  • Perform overhead work for extended periods.
  • Work inside trenches, vaults, confined spaces, and excavations.
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Safely work around high-pressure steam systems and heavy construction equipment.
  • Wear required PPE, including respirators, hearing protection, eye protection, hard hats, gloves, steel-toe boots, and fall protection.

Candidates should have good vision (including color differentiation), hearing, and manual dexterity necessary to safely perform field work.

Work Environment

This position regularly involves:

  • Underground utility construction
  • Active excavation sites
  • Downtown and roadway work zones
  • High-pressure steam systems
  • Industrial facilities
  • Customer buildings
  • Confined spaces
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions

Employees may occasionally work around asbestos-containing materials, energized electrical equipment, and other industrial hazards while following all established safety procedures.

Requirements

We’re looking for individuals who enjoy physically demanding work and have experience in environments such as:

  • Underground utility construction
  • Water, sewer, gas, or steam utilities
  • Heavy civil construction
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Mechanical construction

  • Pipeline construction
  • Excavation and trenching
  • Roadway construction
  • Heavy equipment operations

Successful candidates are dependable, safety-minded, mechanically inclined, and comfortable working outdoors year-round., * High School Diploma or GED

  • Valid Washington State Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)
  • Mechanical aptitude with experience using industrial tools and equipment
  • Ability to safely perform physically demanding work throughout the workday
  • Strong commitment to workplace safety

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with any of the following is highly preferred:

  • Underground utility systems
  • Steam distribution systems
  • Pipefitting or mechanical piping
  • Excavation, trenching, and shoring
  • Confined space entry
  • Traffic control or flagging
  • Industrial maintenance
  • Heavy equipment operation
  • Welding (ASME Section IX certification preferred)
  • CPR and First Aid certification
