Job description

This position resides within the Transmission Design Basis department and focuses on the development, governance, and continuous improvement of Transmission Engineering Standards related to protective relaying, relay settings methodologies, and substation protection system design. The role works closely with Design Engineering, Asset Management, Relay Settings Engineering, construction personnel, procurement, vendors, and configuration management to ensure that protective relaying standards, philosophies, and designs meet system reliability, regulatory, and operational requirements.

You will help define and sustain the technical basis for relay protection schemes, standard drawings, protection philosophies, and associated documentation used across the transmission system.

JOB DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, review, and maintain standard relay protection schemes, application philosophies, and relay settings methodologies for transmission and substation facilities.

  • Evaluate existing protective relaying standards and identify improvements in areas such as fault analysis methods, device coordination, settings criteria, and design templates.

  • Perform technical reviews of protection-related engineering submittals, including vendor relay drawings, logic diagrams, and protection & control (P&C) packages.

  • Support relay settings engineers by providing design basis clarification, standard updates, philosophy intent, and technical guidance.

  • Review and ensure consistency of relay schematics, wiring diagrams, and equipment application drawings.

Standards Development & Governance

  • Serve as a subject matter expert for a portfolio of standard drawings, templates, relay equipment applications, and design basis documents.

  • Create and revise Transmission Engineering (TE) Standard Documents, catalog IDs/stock codes, and standard protection drawings.

  • Lead or participate in cross-functional teams to evaluate issues identified by internal stakeholders and drive consensus-based solutions.

  • Maintain and enhance the Design Basis department’s SharePoint site and document repositories.

Compliance, Quality, and Industry Alignment

  • Ensure protection-related standards align with applicable industry standards and regulations (e.g., NERC, SERC, IEEE, IEC) and with internal governance requirements.

  • Support audits or inquiries related to protection system applications, standard compliance, and revisions.

  • Collaborate with external technical consortia, industry groups, and universities to remain current with evolving protection engineering practices.

Engineering Support & Lifecycle Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support throughout the design, construction, commissioning, and maintenance phases of protection systems.

  • Apply engineering judgment and protection principles to evaluate alternatives, propose solutions, and interpret applicable codes, standards, and utility practices.

  • Lead or support change management efforts for standard updates, including training and lessons learned sessions.

  • Assist with storm/emergency restoration activities as required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred; Mechanical, Civil, Industrial, or accredited Engineering Technology degrees considered with PE).

  • Preferred: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with emphasis on power systems or protection.

Experience

  • Engineer II: 2+ years engineering experience

  • Engineer III: 4+ years engineering experience

  • Senior Engineer: 6+ years engineering experience

  • Preferred : 3+ years experience in relay design, relay settings, substation design, protection & control, asset management, or related technical engineering fields.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Strong understanding of electric power system protection, fault current behavior, relay coordination, and protective device application.

  • Ability to interpret and develop relay schematics, logic diagrams, and construction drawings.

  • Knowledge of construction and commissioning practices for substation protection systems.

  • Proficiency with engineering design principles and utility design processes.

  • Ability to evaluate complex technical issues, exercise sound judgment, and develop practical solutions.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with engineering staff, field personnel, and stakeholders.

  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency with MS Office tools; familiarity with relay software platforms (e.g., SEL AcSELerator, GE Enervista) is a plus.

  • Commitment to safety, hazard recognition, and adherence to company safety policies.

  • Ability to identify and drive process improvements within engineering standards and protection design practices.

CERTIFICATES & LICENSES
