Senior Software Engineer

As a Senior Software Engineer - Search Devops, you play a pivotal role in driving the success of advanced search solutions by actively contributing to their strategic direction and hands-on implementation. Through your technical expertise and collaborative approach, you help build scalable, high-performance search platforms that provide outstanding user experiences and support the continued growth of Caterpillar’s eCommerce initiatives.

What You Will Do:

• Contribute to defining and implementing the long-term technical vision for the search platform, supporting scalability and adaptability as data volumes and query complexity increase.
• Participate in technical reviews, share best practices, and collaborate with search engineers to solve technical devops / Security challenges as part of the team.
• Collaborate closely with Search engineering teams to provide recommendations on DevOps best practices, Cat Digital DevOps standards, and troubleshooting of developer challenges in the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC).
• Work with developers to create, optimize, and troubleshoot Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) pipelines.
• Work with developers to create, optimize, and troubleshoot cloud infrastructure deployments using Infrastructure as Code (IAC).
• Work with developers in the usage of cloud services and assist in troubleshooting solution problems, including IAM, networking and other configuration issues
• Assist in developing advanced features such as NLP, vector search, and personalization to improve relevance and accuracy.
• Support the creation of search capabilities with measurable KPIs (e.g., CTR, Query Distribution, Zero Search) and use analytics to help continuously optimize search performance.
• Work closely with product managers, data scientists, and engineering teams to align search efforts with business goals.

Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

Software Development: Knowledge of software development tools and activities; ability to produce software products or systems in line with product requirements.

Software Development Life Cycle: Knowledge of software development life cycle; ability to use a structured methodology for delivering and managing new or enhanced software products to the marketplace.

Software Integration Engineering: Knowledge of software integration processes and functions; ability to design, develop and maintain interfaces and linkage to alternative platforms and software packages.

Software Product Design/Architecture: Knowledge of software product design; ability to convert market requirements into the software product design.

Software Product Technical Knowledge: Knowledge of technical aspects of a software products; ability to design, configure and integrate technical aspects of software products., * Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or related field. OR equivalent working experience

• 5+ years of experience in search engineering.
• 2+ years in a technical leadership role.
• Strong understanding of modern search technologies and frameworks.
• Working experience with building Low-latency API in AWS using Memory-storage solutions.
• Experience with AWS cloud services (such as IAM, S3, Lambda, SageMaker, API Gateway, and RDS)
• Strong experience creating, managing, and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps and/or GitHub Actions.
• Familiarity with A/B testing frameworks for evaluating and improving
• Strong knowledge with cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, etc.)
• Advanced experience with version control / repositories such as GitHub
• Experience operating in an Agile / Global team environment
• Must demonstrate strong initiative, interpersonal skills, and the ability to communicate effectively
• Experience in Web content / large Content search solutions.
• Previous experience with Search products such as OpenSearch, Elastic Search, SOLR, Lucene, Coveo, and LucidWorks Fusion.
• Strong expertise in building crawlers, Web information parsing solutions.
• Distributed Systems: Proven experience building large-scale, highly available systems.
• Programming:
• Proficiency in Java, Python, or Scala, including source control tools and practices for managing code and changes to it.
• Proficiency in software debugging and problem-solving techniques.
• Deep understanding of Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) principals and best practices
• Experience managing and deploying AWS infrastructure via AWS CloudFormation
• Proficiency in AI code generation tools such as Claude Code, ChatGPT, or GitHub Copilot.
• Familiarity with DevOps tools and techniques for cloud deployment.
• Producing and consuming APIs
