Job description

Amazon’s People Experience and Technology Central Science (PXTCS) team uses economics, behavioral science, statistics, machine learning, and Generative AI to proactively identify mechanisms and process improvements that simultaneously improve Amazon and the lives, well-being, and value of work for Amazonians. PXTCS is an interdisciplinary team that combines the talents of science, engineering, and UX to build and deliver solutions that measurably achieve this goal - at a scale that touches over 1.5 million Amazonians worldwide.

PXTCS is seeking a Software Development Manager to lead an engineering team responsible for taking its most important ML and AI models from research into reliable, large-scale production systems. This person will own the technical strategy, architecture, and operational excellence of the services that serve these models, while building and growing the team of engineers who deliver them.

This is a hands-on leadership role: the SDM will be deep enough in the system to make architectural calls and unblock engineers, while also owning hiring, mentorship, and delivery commitments across the team.

The SDM will work side-by-side with the applied scientists, economists, and data scientists who develop these models, translating research-grade prototypes into production-grade systems that are scalable, efficient, secure, and fault-tolerant. This role partners closely with TPMs, Data Engineers, product managers, and business stakeholders across PXT to ensure the systems built meet real operational needs, and represents the engineering roadmap and technical tradeoffs to senior leadership.

Key job responsibilities

  • Own the technical strategy, architecture, and end-to-end delivery of production services that host and serve PXTCS’s ML/AI models, ensuring they are scalable, highly available, secure, and fault-tolerant.

  • Hire, mentor, and grow a high-performing team of software engineers.

  • Partner directly with applied scientists, economists, data engineers and data scientists to take models from research and experimentation through to productionization, establishing repeatable paths from science to production (MLOps, CI/CD, model monitoring, and retraining pipelines).

  • Set and maintain engineering standards through design reviews, code reviews, and operational readiness reviews; provide hands-on technical guidance when the team hits hard problems.

  • Drive operational excellence for live production systems, including monitoring, alerting, on-call practices, incident response, and root-cause analysis.

  • Communicate technical strategy, tradeoffs, risks, and status clearly to both technical teams and senior leadership.

  • Collaborate with TPMs, product managers, and business stakeholders across PXT to prioritize roadmap investments against business impact.

Requirements

3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of engineering experience

  • 1+ years of providing technical leadership and project management for all aspects of the software development lifecycle experience

  • 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using service-oriented architecture experience

  • 1+ years of developing large-scale, multi-tiered distributed software systems using distributed programming experience

  • 5+ years of Software Engineer, Software Developer, or related occupational experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

  • Experience productionizing machine learning systems, including MLOps practices such as model deployment, monitoring, versioning, and retraining pipelines at scale.
