Job description

COLUMBIA Integrated Power Systems (IPS) Engineering has an opening for an engineer to support the design, test, and system integration of the COLUMBIA Class Main Propulsion Motor Drives (MPDs). This role provides the opportunity to oversee the development and integration of critical components into the revolutionary electric propulsion system for the COLUMBIA Class. The D489 MPD team responsibilities include MPD design efforts, qualification testing, and analysis of complex systems within the component including control systems, fluids systems, structural, and materials. Additionally, the team has a strong focus on driving the supplier deliverables, test procedures, test reports, and design to meet all applicable requirements without deviation while identifying deficiencies in the specification to apply lessons learned to future electric propulsion plant submarine topologies. Engineers in the group will assist in MPD construction support and shipboard integration at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities and test support at the Electric Boat Shipyard in Groton, CT, and the IPS Compatibility Test Facility (CTF) in Philadelphia, PA.

Responsibilities:

  • The engineer hired for this position will be expected to:
  • Coordinate supplier MPD design and redesign efforts (Hardware and Software)
  • Verify control system design compliance with specifications and system requirements
  • Support testing and troubleshooting for MPDs at the Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, CT, the IPS CTF, and supplier facility
  • Support lifecycle management activities including maintenance oversight
  • Interface with technical and management personnel at NAVSEA, NNL, NSWC, and vendors
  • Interface with Operations and Trades at Electric Boat manufacturing facilities

  • Experience working with government customers

  • Ability to understand macro level objectives and priorities while driving detailed level actions

  • Multi-disciplinary systems engineering experience in complex systems based products

  • Experience with Military Standards

  • Experience in control systems, variable speed motor drives, fluid systems engineering, or thermal analysis

  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Simulink

  • Experience with model based systems engineering

Skills

  • Effective communicator
