Senior UI/UX Designer (Contract)

We’re hiring a contract UI/UX designer to take an existing, working prototype of an enterprise web application and turn it into a production-ready design system and a complete set of high-fidelity screens documented well enough that an engineering team can build it without interpretation.

Four to six weeks, 15-25 hours per week; Figma design system, high-fidelity screens, then interactive prototype and developer handoff. Defined scope, defined end. You will be the only designer on this project, and the design decisions will be yours to make pending approval.

The application is a browser-based workspace where business users query their own operational data, run guided multi-step workflows against it, and read live dashboards. It is dense, role-aware, and assistant-driven. The challenge is creating digestible screens from information heavy outputs.

What you’ll do

• Audit an existing clickable prototype and an established brand system, then set the visual and interaction direction for the product
• Build a Figma design system: component library with variants and auto layout, typography and color styles wired to existing design tokens, documented states, light and dark themes
• Design high-fidelity screens for the application shell, the primary assistant/chat surface, category browse views, and 2-3 representative multi-step workflows and data dashboards
• Design data tables, filters, multi-step forms, and stateful wizards at real information density.
• Design the unglamorous states, IE; empty, loading, partial, error, permission-denied - as first-class work, not afterthoughts
• Make data visualization infrastructure: chart coloration, labeling style, axis and legend treatment, etc
• Ensure responsive behavior from desktop down to tablet
• Build an interactive Figma prototype of the primary flows
• Produce a developer handoff spec: spacing, component states, breakpoints, interaction notes, and a token-based theming guide for per-client rebranding
• Work directly with the founders in a weekly review, and scope your own work between them

• 4+ years designing software product interfaces (UI/UX, product design, or equivalent)
• A portfolio containing at least two data-dense B2B, enterprise, or internal-tool products; dashboards, data tables, multi-step forms, filtering, admin surfaces. Marketing sites, brochure sites, and consumer apps alone will not be enough to evaluate this work.
• Advanced Figma: component libraries, variants, auto layout, variables and design tokens, interactive prototyping, Dev Mode handoff
• Demonstrated ownership of a design system that another team then implemented from. You can point to it and describe how it was consumed
• Responsive design across desktop and tablet breakpoints
• WCAG 2.x AA accessibility in practice: contrast ratios, focus states, keyboard navigation
• Light and dark theming driven from a shared token set
• Ability to design inside an established brand system
• Written communication strong enough to specify your own designs for engineers
• Self-directed delivery: you scope, estimate, and hit dates without a design manager above you

Preferred qualifications

• Design experience with AI or assistant interfaces - citations, source attribution, streaming responses, confidence and uncertainty states
• Multi-brand or white-label theming driven by design tokens
• Familiarity with a mature design system
• Experience designing for a component-based front end (React or similar), and comfort reading a running prototype to understand intended behavior
• Design system documentation

• A brand system; mark, a 10-stop color scale with WCAG ratios already computed, type pairing, voice guide
• A working clickable prototype with source
• Real screen content and real workflow logic with available creative extrapolation
• A written product spec, and founder decisions inside hours rather than weeks

Contract details

• Contract, 2 months, 15-25 hours per week, invoiced on milestones
• $80-$110 per hour, depending on experience
• Remote and async-first. Indianapolis-area candidates preferred - close enough for an occasional in-person working session when that’s the fastest way to settle something. A preference, not a requirement; strong remote candidates elsewhere in the US should apply.
• All final files are delivered in Figma and owned by us. Mutual NDA and IP assignment required.
• Possibility of follow-on work, but this engagement is scoped and priced on its own.
