Job description
The Commission Tech performs field startup, verification, functional testing, troubleshooting, documentation, and turnover support for BAS, BMS, EPMS, PLC, and SCADA/HMI systems in data centers and other mission-critical facilities. Executes assigned work from approved drawings, sequences of operation, and commissioning plans. Reports to Field & Service Operations or an assigned Commissioning Leader; coordinates with Project Management, Engineering, Programming, installation partners, vendors, and customer representatives. Design authority, programming authority, and final technical acceptance remain with functions designated by ATS. Independent field assignment is based on demonstrated capability, not tenure - developmental technicians work under supervision until they demonstrate the safety judgment, technical discipline, and documentation quality required for independent deployment., Safety & Site Conduct
- Follow ATS, customer, and regulatory safety requirements; participate in job-hazard analysis, lockout/tagout, and electrical-safety planning; perform energized work only when trained and authorized.
- Exercise stop-work authority for unsafe conditions or invalidated test results; maintain disciplined site conduct and protect operating systems from unintended disruption.
Commissioning Planning & Installation Verification
- Review scope, drawings, sequences of operation, and point lists before field execution; confirm power, wiring, network, and vendor-startup prerequisites are complete.
- Perform point-to-point checkout of digital/analog I/O, sensors, actuators, and field devices; verify device addressing, communication, and point mapping against approved documentation.
- Identify and log wiring, scaling, or communication deficiencies; maintain redlines for as-built documentation. Do not represent unverified work as test-ready.
Functional Testing - BAS/BMS/EPMS/PLC/SCADA
- Execute pre-functional, functional-performance, and integrated test procedures; validate sequences of operation, interlocks, alarms, staging, and failover/recovery behavior across all operating modes.
- Support FAT/SAT and integrated systems testing; witness and document results without bypassing unresolved defects.
- Scope covers CRAH/CRAC, chilled-water, cooling towers, VFDs, switchgear, generators, ATS, UPS, and PDU/RPP infrastructure, using BACnet, Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, and SNMP protocols.
Programming Support & Troubleshooting
- Use approved tools to diagnose PLCs, controllers, gateways, and SCADA/HMI systems; make only authorized configuration changes - never uncontrolled logic changes, forced points, or bypassed interlocks.
- Apply disciplined root-cause troubleshooting to distinguish field-device, wiring, network, programming, and OEM-equipment failures; retest and document before recommending closure; escalate high-risk or recurring issues promptly and do not conceal unresolved defects.
Documentation, Turnover & Stakeholder Coordination
- Maintain accurate, current test scripts, issue records, redlines, and turnover documentation with no gap between fieldwork and the written record.
- Coordinate with Project Management, Engineering, Programming, vendors, and customer/commissioning-authority representatives; escalate scope, schedule, and risk issues through established channels.
- Support customer training, demonstrations, and final handoff to Service/Warranty/NOC; protect project margin by avoiding preventable rework and unapproved scope changes.
Requirements
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent; 2+ years in BAS/BMS, EPMS, PLC controls, or related field service/commissioning (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Ability to read control drawings, electrical schematics, and sequences of operation; working knowledge of controls communication protocols; strong documentation and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license; ability to meet project travel, shift, site-access, and physical requirements.
- Must be able to travel and remain on-site for entire length of project.
Preferred
- 3+ years of data center or mission-critical commissioning experience; FAT/SAT or functional-performance testing experience.
- Experience with Rockwell Automation, Siemens, Schneider Electric, Tridium Niagara, Ignition, AVEVA, FactoryTalk, or WinCC platforms.
- Associate degree or technical training in controls, electrical, or HVAC; OSHA 10/30, NFPA 70E, or relevant manufacturer certifications.
